If you can't get one, take a larger wooden dowel, and use a sharp chisel or knife to put a "step" of the right depth in its tip. You use the proud part of the tip of the dowel to tap and seat the seal without damaging it, and the shorter part bumps up against the case to control depth so you don't seat too deeply. The real tool is much better of course, but if you want to take some garage scraps and get-r-done, this can work pretty well if you are careful. |

If I remember right it was a green "fiddlestix" with one half of the split end removed… |

Tinker toy, but yes. Jack (then probably 6, now about to go into high school) walked into the garage to watch what I was doing, looked down, and said "Hey! That's my tinker toy!". Which was even funnier, as when I had done the job the first time about a month earlier (seating it too deep and leading to a quick failure), I had taken a stout plastic cup from the kitchen. It was cone shaped, so I was able to cut it in just the right place to have a thick plastic ring of just the right width to drive in the seal evenly. Shelly (my wife) had walked into the garage during that job, and said "Hey! I liked that cup!". I was totally busted! |
