Hey guys. I have a quick question. On the bottom end of the engine I hear a rhythmic soft knock or at least it sounds like a knock. When I pull the clutch lever in it get quieter, but its still there. Is it normal buell noise? Is there anyone near rosamond ca that wants to come by and listen?

Thanks,
Barry

A loose stator bell (crank nut) sounds the opposite, it kind of rings when there is no load on the motor, and stops when you let the clutch lightly drag.

These things make a lot of different noises, and they vary a lot between bikes, and many noises are harmless and some are definitely not.

It has been my experience that these '06 engines will make a lot of noise with synthetic oil. I switched mine to non syn HD oils according to the owners manual charts, and it became much quieter, not so much like a dryer full of marbles. You could also need to adjust the primary chain.

Now with over 62,000 miles, I have been running non synthetic Rotella 15W-40 diesel oil for the last 30,000 or so. In summer's heat I add a half pint of STP or Lucas thick and chewy oil additive.

It still runs smooth and quiet without using or loosing any more oil than it did when it was first broken in. I change the oil at 2500 to 3000 miles. Usually about 1500 miles in I have to add half a pint or so.

Do not try to keep the oil level above the second "X" from the bottom of the dip stick. It will seek it's own level and pump the excess into your air box. This is normal. And remember to not use the torque spec on the oil drain plug. The book is wrong on that.

Dont know how many miles but seems best to start on outside underneath. Anything loose, or can be shook or wiggled. Work your way up thru frame. Then get stethoscope to listen round engine. All round since noise n vibes travel far. Check on oil pump drive gear being 06. Keep looking n checking stuff off as you go. Good luck!

I think Slaughter is out your way.

There are a couple of Buell XBs that frequent the Rock Store on Sundays.

Listen to this video. My bike makes this same tinging/knock noise that can be heard here. I guess its normal, I have 10,000 miles like this.

Wear earplugs and the engine sounds way quieter.

Might check the primary tension.

Mine was loose and slapping against the inside of the primary case.
