Hey folks, In order to replace my starter I had to take off the primary cover which meant I had to completely loosen the tension on the main drive chain. After putting everything back together, I'm noticing that it's difficult to shift down. When I press down on the shift lever, it moves down but I have to repeat this several times before it actually shifts. Additionally, I've noticed that it gets worse when the bike is warmed up. I've looked at the shop manual troubleshooting section and this isn't addressed. I'm fairly certain that this is caused by improper chain tension but the question is...is it too tight or too loose? I could, and will, go out and try adjusting but before I went full experimental I thought I'd ask in here because somebody must have experienced this and figured it out. Thanks.... |

I would think too tight. It gets tighter as the engine warms up due to the aluminum case growing faster than the steel chain. |

Get it hot and find the tight spot as it's not the same everywhere. When you find it set it at 1/4", should be good. |
