just bought bike. 18,000 miles. dropped exhaust when I noticed oil sitting on top of exhaust and found blow back on bottom of bike. looks to be coming from case. can I fix this or is it a shop fix by splitting cases. I also found oil plug leaking. figure this is the crush washer not being replaced at time of oil change? have clutch weep issue also. I figured that I bought a 1 owner bike that he would know all/any issues....swears he didn't know. |

the engines are pretty robust...a leak from the cases with only 18000 miles would be rare IMO. a) there is more than (1) drain plug on the bike...there is one on the "clutch" side that may have been removed and had a "leaky" crush washer replaced...it's near the muffler but not under in the cases ...it could be a source of the leak. b) if for some reason the "sump cover" was removed...it does have a "fragile" gasket and may be the source of your leak ( the muffler must be removed to access it) c) if the PO had the Rotor mod done ( 2009 bikes have a charging issue ...see the sub forum in this forum for info) the mechanic doing the repair may have used the "crank locking tool" in order to remove the rotor nut...the "plug" where that locking tool goes (in the cases near the parting line) may be leaking...tough to see as the "hole" is recessed into the cases...you'll need to drop the muffler and use a flash light and mirror to start the investigation. ...maybe the weeping clutch slave cylinder is the source of the fluid on top of the muffler? d)The EBR clutch/slave cylinder fix will solve the weep ($100 for parts), but you'll need big snap ring pliers to remove the retaining ring on the old cylinder to facilitate the repair...don't give up yet - these are unique bikes and when running well perform uniquely. hope this helps |

Find the leak! My bike had sat for 3 years and developed an engine case leak that dropped oil on the exhaust. Wasn't too bad to fix myself (Message edited by sprintst on December 30, 2014) |
