Got a 98 S1W , have done the cranks seal and few other things and finally got to ride. Love the bike and thinking about buying another Buell with bigger seat to take the wife! Like the Cyclones look but saw that it has conventional forks. How do these handle? Have seen people here swapping the whole front end to get the upside down forks, is it worth it? Also, my bike has not had the recalls done. Anybody ever had the shock fail on their S1W? |

I had one break (on an S3T) on I-35 at speed. But it was a prototype. I am aware of only one other than had broken in service. There are far more stories than verified accounts. |

I had a cyclone for a fair bit of time - loved it before I started fiddling with it too much, wife enjoyed it too. Only complaint I ever heard from the back was rain riding - get an old school S1 rear fender… Bike handled great. The conventional forks have a better turning radius too, not a huge difference but most folks put the upside downers on for looks - me included. Mine did leak before shock recall. Made it pogo a little but nothing I couldn't deal with. Chances are you'll get one with a recall shock and it'll be a non issue. Enjoy. |

Street riding, you'll never notice the difference between USD forks and M2 forks. They're mega-adjustable and work great. I have an '01 M2L that has USD X1 forks on it...because I'm 6'4" and didn't want a low. So I changed them, along with the shock. USD's were simply easier to locate. Finding the fender? Was a BITCH. Shoulda thought about that before I got the forks/shock/shock mount |

The SHOCK EYELET "TEST" is done with a MAGNET !!! If the MAGNET sticks to the EYELETS the SHOCK is good ... Still running the OEM SHOCK on my 1997 S3T ... Due to me being a UNIVERSITY OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON(Class 0f 1959)Factory trained MECHANIC the last dealer "i" worked for allowed me to sign off on all the RE-CALL paper work and was handed all the RE-CALL PARTS ... |

Good to know about the handling, thought with a bunch of conversions going on there was something wrong. I am 6'2" so I guess I'll see how it fits size wise if I can find a deal on one. I will double check on the eyelet and see if my shock is the one with the problems, thanks for the info. Thing handles pretty sweet so far, haven't done any adjustments for my weight yet just a little stiff. |

For good handling you start with "EGERNOMICALLY" setting up your bike ... ie: seating position, foot pegs, rear brake lever, shift lever(position), handlebars(position), clutch level(adjustment/position), front brake lever(position/adjustment), front forks-spring pre-load, compression/rebound, and fluid valves, rear shock-preload, rebound/compression, and tires-front/rear tread pattern and front/rear tire pressure ... |

I'm a dirt rider so I'm familiar with setup. I wouldn't trade any modern dirtbike forks for conventional forks that's for sure. The seating position on the S1W leaves a little to be desired with the nuts squashed up against the tank because of the downward slope, don't think I'll be using this bike for any cross country tours.

Hooked, If the shock has an exposed spring (and is not an aftermarket shock) it is the "recalled" shock. |

It's funny that you hear all this talk about shock failures but nobody asks about failures on aftermarket shocks. I wouldn't mind betting that there have been more failures on aftermarket shocks than there ever were on the oe units. |

What RatBuell said. Maybe someone who really has pushed these on a track would feel the difference between the two fork styles. The M2 forks are very stout, due in part to their diameter and they've got the fork brace. As for the shock breakage, the S1 I just bought in April I believe had a rear shock failure at some point in it's 7200 miles before me. The oil tank has rub marks from the rear tire. I do like the way it looks with the exposed spring. Looks like I would need the shock, mount and swingarm just to change over? No chance at all the dealer is going to do that for free right? I haven't seen any used setups on ebay. Might just have to take my chances with it. |

The dealer can check your VIN to see if there are open recalls. If there are open recalls, the dealer should perform them at no cost to you. |

Guess I'll have to check when I get some time. I guess they would take my parts if they did the recall, would like to keep them if possible. |

Yes recall parts are taken from you. Can't have it both ways. |
