I`m trying to decide whether to upgrade the 22 amp stator on the S2. If I add up the draw of headlight, spark, two Gerbing jackets, and recharging the battery from the last engine start,it seems less than 22 amps. (No fuel pump or ECU). If so, does it matter to the longevity of the system if its operating at near full current most of the time.

You need to remember that the 22 amps is only in a specific RPM range, at idle and below that RPM range, there will be less amps available. If you haven't yet, install a voltmeter on your bike, the compact single LED ones change color based on voltage and you can keep it easily hidden. This will allow you to monitor your voltage while you ride to see if you really need to upgrade or just cut back on your usage.

Also worth considering is an LED headlight. Pretty expensive still, but easier to swap than the charging system and will give you more light for less amps.

I haven't had a dead battery issue with the usage I subject it to. I currently (pardon the pun) have a dead stator. I wonder if it died from excess use. Pondering electrical theory, the magnets are spinning past the coils of the stator, creating voltage, whether its used or not. The voltage regulator bleeds off voltage? current? to keep output at the desired level. Do the wires in the stator care if the current they produce is used to power a jacket or bled off by the voltage regulator. I'm confused about how the VR works.

I can hook you up with a device that will only power the heated gear when the stator is making enough current to charge the battery. When it isn't (low RPM) the heated gear will kick out until the surplus power becomes available again. Probably for 1/4 of what a stator would cost.

PM me if you are interested
