O7 Uly, bike almost always hesitates to start when button is pushed. Started doing this about a year ago. Seems to have gotten worse. Could it be the TPS is not set right ? | ||

No, it's just a long stroke high compression engine that doesn't have enough push from the starter to get it through the compression stroke. Mines been doing it forever but always starts. Harley's do the same thing if they have higher compression than stock. Many warmed over Harley's have compression releases to help with this issue. A new battery might cure it but your old battery will still start the bike for a long time. So, don't worry, they all do that!  | ||

If it is more noticeable over time try tightening your battery cables. I always say if you can force the cables move with your fingers they are too loose. | ||

Mine always does that. Started about a year or two after I bought it. I've put dialectic grease and tightened every ground that I could find, and made sure my battery cables were tight. Still does it. I still have the original battery, so maybe a new one would help. Bike starts every time though... | ||

My 08 XT has done that since brand new. I have learned to just hold the button until it starts. Do not release it and try again, just hold it on. | ||

Mine has always done it as well. It's unnerving, but once you get used to it, it's normal. | ||

just hold the button until it starts hold the button ,all the lights go out ,all electric juice are sucked to the starter ,keep on pushing that button and there it comes to live!  oh what a great rumble does these engines give ,and you go for a long nice ride | ||

My 08 XT did not have the hesitation at first but it did develop around 10K miles or so. I replace the battery at the beginning of last year in which the hesitation went away but it has come back. Not exactly sure why but it hasn't failed to ever start....knock on wood! | ||

My 06 did that for 6 years till I replaced the battery and it still does. | ||

Can't find the link right now, but I saw a 1.4kw starter (stock is 1.0kw) on ebay I think it was. My 06 has had the hesitation since new despite cleaning and securing and even adding a dedicated 10ga ground wire to the starter. Whenever I get around to putting it back together I may try that starter. | ||

Same as Smac,08X - hesitation began at 18-24 months, but always started, never left me stranded. New battery after 5 years and no more hesitation.I guess I have a few months before it goes back to hesitation mode. | ||

I have also noticed that my 08 XT starter hesitates a little less after I have had the battery tender on it for a few days. Apparently just a little more juice makes the difference. There are also other things that affect how much the starter hesitates, such as ambient temp, engine temp and time ridden between starts. One more thing, I doubt these engines always stop at the same crank position each time so if the flywheel can spin just a little before the first cylinder goes against compression, it will help the starter just a bit. |
