I have a 2008 1125r, I was having issues getting it to start a couple weeks ago. The engine would turn over fine but it would not fire. I tested the battery and it seemed a little weak so I replaced it. Still could not get it to fire so I replaced the start solenoid under the seat. The bike fired right up with a little pop, (I'm guessing unburned fuel). So I took it out for a small ride and everything seemed good. The next day I went on a long ride and about 40 miles into the ride I started to get a low uncontrolled idle. And it continued to get worse. Eventually it was to the point where if I would pull the clutch in the bike would shut off. So at idle it was only FIRING ONE CYLINDER. And only if I give it throttle would the other cylinder join the party. I held it at 3000 rpms for the remainder of the ride so I could make it home. It seemed the warmer it was the worse the problem was. To me it just sound like the firing order is wrong. It definitely does not sound the way it normally does. I ran the codes on the cluster and it came up front 02 sensor mis communication. I called a dealer to have them look at it and they said they don't work on them anymore..... So I need to fix this myself. Can anybody please help me so I can get back on 2 wheels. Thanks!

I'm no expert on Buell's by any stretch of the imagination but an IC engine is not rocket science although the ancillaries that drive it can be very daunting!

Firstly you have to determine whats happening in the combustion chamber to get some idea as to where to look , so -

Pull both your spark plugs and check the color, They should be a light chocolate to tan color, if -

You have a plug that is white check down the side of the porcelain insulator into the spark plug, you may note a yellowish/green tinge , it points to a lean mixture ,ie fuel starvation and overheating.

Could point to a bad injector or any number of other issues , bridges to be crossed by additional input more knowledgeable than myself.

If one of your plugs is a shiny dark black, it points to an excessively rich mixture, bad plug, bad HT lead , injector not closing properly, again bridges we will have to cross once we know whats happening in the cylinder.

It definitely sounds like a mixture problem as reported by the code.

Might be an idea to source another workshop that may be more helpful.

Turn over fine but not start... that doesn't sound like a battery or a starter solenoid. Both of those would stop turning over, not turn over and not start.

And I don't understand what you mean by pulling in the clutch would kill the motor... was it like somebody hit the kill switch? Or was it that you had to stay on the throttle with the bike moving and in gear to keep it running?

Thank you, I will get to work on it this week and will see what I find.

As far as the pulling the clutch in, I meant it as I needed to stay on the throttle greater than 3k rpms to keep both cylinders firing during gear changes and traffic stops.

My 09 ULY which has (DDFI 3 ECM like the 1125}had the same symptoms.I reset the adaptive fuel value cleared any historic codes with EBR CDI {I repeated and got the same results 3 times} I replace the O2 sensor which had a small nick on the wire from the fan.. Anyway the bike would run good for about 37 miles and could feel a slight bump/miss that would get worse and limp home the way your bike did.End up being a bad ECM (no codes).
