When I rotate the engine, does the rear wheel and belt have to be removed or can the engine be rotated without taking off the rear wheel? | ||

The rear axle just needs to be loosened, and yes it needs to happen. As you rotate the axle to loosen it you will notice that it is tapered. Once the taper is all the way out of the wheel bearing (its only about 2.5 inches long) it creates the needed slack in the drive belt to rotate the engine. | ||

Joe check your service manual, It may call for you to slip the belt off the sprockets | ||

Thanks guys. I'm just in the middle of a heated argument with the local HD dealership that did the 12,000 mile service. It looks like when they put the bike back together, they didn't align the rear wheel correctly as the belt and the rear sprocket began to rub against the swingarm. Not to mention the pinch bolt dropped off on the way home from the shop. Now they're telling me they didn't do anything and the damage must've been done before they got the bike as they didn't remove the rear wheel during the engine rotation. So before I show up at the shop and scream at the owner, I'm trying to get my facts straight. It's really embarrassing to be wrong in these types of situations.  | ||

It's true, the manual states you do not remove the rear wheel, only loosen it for the engine rotation.The rear wheel aligns itself when the axle is torqued properly. Since they would have loosened the rear wheel to do the rotation, maybe they forgot to properly tighten the axle which may be the reason the pinch bolt fell out as well. The pinch bolt is tightened after the axle is tightened. (Message edited by Redbat on May 22, 2014) | ||

what year Joe, I have an 08 and will put the instructions up for you if needed 22 remove fastener and engine sprocket cover 23 cut cable strap from speed sensor remove heat deflector from right side of vehicle 24 ** loosen pinch bolt, then.... 24 loosen rear axle until axle is out of bearing 25 remove shift lever 26 remove left foot peg assy A rotate idler until muffler fastener is accessible B remove muffler mounting bolt C remove idler pulley fastener D remove upper and lower foot peg support fasteners E to allow clearance for the drive belt rotate the idler bracket away from the foot peg support F remove foot peg support 27 remove right foot peg 28 remove muffler 29 support engine The belt does not have to be removed as Chris pointed out the axle was not properly installed if the pinch bolt was missing / fell out Who was the dealer? so that they can be avoided.... | ||

Was up at the dealer and they agreed to cover the cost of the repair and parts. Didn't even have to argue about it so they are back in my good books. To err is human but how you go about correcting the error is how they should be judged and at the moment, they've done a great job of remedying the situation. Thanks again guys for the advice and the guidance. It helped a lot and I really wish I was as mechanically inclined as everyone else on this site. I blame my parents! |
