Does anyone know who makes this setup?

That's the Touratech rack. They discontinued it a while back. I tried to see if they had any left at the factory a couple of years ago but sadly not - a shame because it is very neat and does away with the triple tail.

I like the idea of the triple tail but in practice I just find that it is always in the way. The only reason I move it is to get under the seat or into my top box.

That's what I figured. Guess I'll keep a lookout for one.

...you could always take the triple tail off, and plug the mounting holes with bolts and rubber washers...but then you lose the grab rails too.

I don't ever use the grab handles anyway. I like that the top case is moved forward with this rack.

Simond,

Do you remember the name of this rack?

I have their current catalogue in front of me and all of their luggage racks are called.......... "luggage racks"!
Unfortunately I threw away my old catalogue with all the Buell stuff in it a few months ago. This was the picture though:

They still sell the pannier frames but I suspect that they will soon be dropped too. I almost bought a set a few weeks ago but don't think that I will ever want to spend the £1,200 or so on the latest bags to fit them. I'm happy with my Givi stuff.

$25 piece of aluminum and a drill and jig saw and you're in business

.....I think the tube bender, welding kit and powder coating might be handy too!

I think the Triple Tail is really useful. Up to now I used to slot a Ventura BikePak over it. No need for the frame. The pack is very old, so I've decided to mount a 45L Shad top box on the Triple Tail in the forward position. I could still use it as a rack in the back position if I want. Naturally without the box attached.

Can you elaborate on how to mount the Shad top case on the triple tail. Sounds like something that I would like to try. Been looking for an easy way to mount a top case.

Just fit the base plate on to the Triple Tail the usual way. Drill the relevant number of holes and there you are. An acquaintance in London had one on his. He also had a rear rack with a base plate attached as well. When he was riding solo the box went on the Triple Tail. When he had a passenger the box went on the rack.

Augustus,
like you, I spent months looking for something like this... I'd see a photo of something perfect... only to discover that it went out of production last year... I even went so far as to inquire to Touratech if I could "pre-sale" enough items here at Bad Web, if they would do a run... no dice... I get it... We Buell'ers are on our own... But honestly, with the community here on the BadWeb, i think I kind of prefer it that way... We have to "work it out", we have to put our skin into it....

OK, i'm quickly digressing.... On to it!

So I recently did my own take on the exact thing you are referencing in your OP... This rack/plate set-up is very similar to the TT one, or at least I fashioned/intended it after that..., and does away with the Beaver Tail. I got a rear rack from Happy-Trails (sans rear plate - They were quite amenable to take the plate out and just charge me for the rack and hardware alone, very gracious). Happy Trails has this rack readily available, BTW. I'd always been a fan of the AltRider equipment, so I gave them a call and talked to Jimmy (at AltRider) about my idea... He said.... You better bring it over... So, after I installed the Happy Trails rack, I drove the Uly up to AltRider, which is about 12-blocks from my house, and Jimmy was kind enough to spend some time pulling all the prototype plates out from the basement and figure out which one was going to work on the Uly best... (I had not know Jimmy previously, and everyone at AltRider were just as gracious as Jimmy... Truly stellar folks)

The verdict... The AltRider plate for the 650 VStrom - The front holes of the Happy Trails rack line up perfectly to the AltRider plate holes, and I just drilled two holes for the rear (took about 10-minutes) and there it is! The result.. I have to say... this set up on the Uly looks pretty sexy, in my opinion... Jimmy did mutter under his breath... I suppose we're going to get an onslaught of sales of these to you Buell guys... Maybe so Jimmy, Maybe so....??

There are a few details... You need to get AltRider to put 4 "more" spacers in with the hardware pack. And I found that bolts a 1/4" longer than those that come with the plate made me feel a bit safer... ( I got those myself) Anyway, if anyone wants more details of how this went down, just shoot me a PM and I'll be happy to go over it with you... Like Augustus.... I spent months chasing TT, Ventura... always a few weeks/months/years late of the "Buell Cut-Off"....

Nice find. I didn't know about that one.
I see they do a neat mounting plate for Givi luggage too.

Just noticed that the Altrider plate will take Givi mounts too.
Fantastic.

Hey Simond, Yes, That is my understanding as well. All the AltRider plates are predrilled to use the Givi mounts.
