I have had my grips installed for about 2 years and never have had a problem with them. Now they just won't work. No high, no low. Nothing. Fuse is good. I can't hear the relay click. Never payed attention if it clicked before or not. I was playing with a volt meter and confirmed ground is good, 12 volts at fuse but nothing at the plug behind the flyscreen. Anyone have issues with theirs? Relay? | ||

Sounds like the relay, that's the easiest to check. A relay is simply a mechanical device that is triggered by a low power signal, and jumpers the high power line(s) to make a connect. So, just bypass the relay and connect the lines directly, see if the grips heat (Message edited by Sprintst on April 08, 2014) | ||

Update: So after a tons of trouble shooting I don't know exactly what the problem is but I figured out a way around the problem. So key on and kill switch in the on position I get 0 volts at the acc. plug. No click from the relay. I always run Hi and Low beams. I when I turned the Hi beam off, after 2 seconds the acc relay would click on and I would get 12 volts at the plug and the grips warm up. This just started to be an issue. It seems like if there is too much of a load on the system the relay won't click. I was doing this testing with the bike not running and plugged into a tender. The relay does not seem to be the issue. I switched it multiple times with the ignition relay which is the same relay and still continued to have the issue with the acc circuit and not the ignition circuit. I know it's not a big deal and I know I don't need heated grips for the summer but I just always want everything to work and this is just bugging me. Anyone have any ideas? | ||

I believe your heated grips are powered by the accessory wire under the headlights? That accessory connection is turned on and off by the ECM through that relay. If the operating voltage goes too low, it will turn off the relay. You might have a charging issue or bad battery about to occur. I run my GPS off the accessory connection. If I sit and idle with high beams on, it will turn of my GPS. It has always done that. | ||

Check your battery voltage while doing those tests with the highbeams on again. The accessory line is controlled by the ECM, and if the voltage drops below a specific threshold (11v?), it shuts the line off, and if it comes back up to voltage it will turn it back on. My first guess is that your battery is getting weak and the highbeam is enough of a drain that the ECM shuts the accessory line off. Is your engine running when doing these tests? Might be worth testing the stator AC voltages too. |
