I just finished doing my valve lash adjustment. The lash adjustment range for the exhaust valves is .010 to .013. I set the exhaust valves loose at .013 with one exception. Since I ran out of the appropriate size shims, I had to set one at .014. It was either that or the next size down would put it at .010 . Will this be ok or will it be extra noisy when I start it up? Will it damage anything? Anyone else experience this dilemma? BTW I bought the Hot Cams shim kit. They only provide three shims in each size. |

Pretty sure V-Rod shims are the same as the Rotax engine shims. Check before you use them though because I'm not sure that .001 over is too loose. You need better advice than I can provide. |

Yes,V-Rod shims are identical, but none of the Harley dealers seem to keep any shims in stock. I don't want to order one and wait another week to put my bike together. Now please note my original question above, thanks. |

The Hot Cams kit is the way to go. They do sell extras of individual sizes. One thing to do is rotate the valve train a couple of times and recheck. Sometimes the shims don't seat all the way at first and you need to re-shim, rotate and recheck a couple of times before you button it up. If you don't have a choice, it's better to go on the loose side than tight (they tend to get tighter with time), but you will likely get more valve noise with 'loose'. Yes, I rotated the crankshaft several times to seat the shims, but will it hurt the valves, followers,or cams to be one thousandth of an inch over the recommended range? (Message edited by Redbat on April 10, 2014) |

Listen, the manual has a tolerance within a certain range. Anything out of that range isn't acceptable. It doesn't say that you can be a little loose/tight give or take a thousandth here or a thousandth there. My Harley dealer in town carriers shims. What size do you need to get to 13? I may have what you need. So, to be safe I would go by the book and not risk hurting your machine. |

Now that's an answer, thanks for the voice of reason. This is what I thought but just needed a second opinion. Guess I'll just have to order one and wait. |

I found a dealer that had the shims I need in stock. I now set the lash as follows. All intake valves lash .008 All exhaust valves lash .012 |
