My '00 X1 is getting its winter maintenance right now. Re gasketing and lifters are on the list so the question is, Which lifters and where to get them? thanks, jeff | ||

19526-89A Sportster lifters from the dealer. Soak them in oil overnight before installing to prevent initial start-up clatter. | ||

Thanks for the quick reply, since Im not a fan of the dealerships Ill check out that part # through different vendors and why does the manual say that in 2000 the engines are thunderstorm and use a new style lifters? That's not for my X1 correct? jeff | ||

I may be wrong. My S3 is a '99. I just looked the part number up on Bing search and it comes back as -98. New lifters are the same as twin cam Harleys. Thunderstorm refers to the heads, not sure if that changes the lifters.  Does it look like this? | ||

Before you go pulling the cam cover off, try removing the rocker covers, rocker arms, pushrods, lifter blocks, and pushrod tubes. Then see if a magnet will lift them up. Doesn't always work but if it does, can save you a gasket and much of the job's clean-up. 18538-99C shows in the new part chart as the lifter for 2000-up. Keep track of which pushrod goes where. That lifter is for a 91-99 model. The lifters changed starting in 2000 to the new smaller diameter lifters like the Twin Cams use. They've been through 3 versions of the Twin Cam lifters rev A B and C. B's are the best and C's are giving people lots of problems. If you go buy new lifters you'll get C's. Do yourself a huge favor and get some Gaterman GP1023's. Best lifter you can buy and they're priced well hardly any more than the stockers. I dont know if any sponsors carry them or not but try them first. If not there easy to find with Google. Search "Gaterman GP1023 Lifters" and look toward the bottom of the first page for an online source. | ||

They might just need a good soaking and rubdown. Only if they are locked up or loose after that should they need replacement. I got 130,000 miles out of a set on my last Sportster. | ||

"whats wrong w/ the originals?" nothing I don't think, but maybe, lol I had one let go in my other bike and it tore things up pretty good. Ever since, ive been paranoid. Im kinda figuring for the cost of them it would be a pc of mind. plus I need to regasket so now's the time. | ||

I used a little marvel mystery oil and it seemed to free them up. | ||

Really do your research on these. I started to look for a set and found the same thing on the rev C. They are crap. You will probably have to invest some good time and money into a good set of lifters. How many miles are on your originals? | ||

"Really do your research on these." Im trying, LOL So far only one other suggestion from oem and that was the gaterman 1023. well, come to find out they are made in china. Not sure if that's a deal breaker yet? the 1023 are the performance ones but there stock replacements (cant think of the #) are made in the US, weird. any thoughts on the fueling, S&S or others? BTW 37K miles on my stockers. jeff | ||
