I've looked at the X1 for lots of years, I come and go on the bike mainly because they lack any sort of luggage carrying capacity... And then I bought a Uly. Looking at the side racks I can see potential there to build a set to hang under the X1 tail section. Anybody care to comment on the load bearing capacity of that tail? Am I just asking for trouble? It would have to carry say two 35-42 liter bags either Givi or Hepco Becker, me at #210 with gear on and my wife at 125# with gear. Your thoughts? |

On my M2: I'm at 190, the Mrs is 160. It's a completely different bike with her on it, might even be at the top of our load limit. On those rare occasions I actually miss the H-D. Thankfully 99.9% of my riding is solo |

Here's my take on it, owning 5 tubers, though none is a X1: The X1 is going to have higher pegs than the S3/M2 frame. It's noticeable on long trips (compared to my S1). The S3 and X1 have the same Thunderstorm engine. So unless you already own an X1, I would just look for an S3 to rescue. You can find them with the factory bags and your choice of bars (the taller "S3T" bars or the standard, low bar). It's a brilliant sport tourer. Last summer, I did two 500+ mile days, including 400-ish miles of freeway each day, and the rest in the Sierras (Sequoia, Kings Canyon and the foothills around that area).

I have an X1 and utilise the following for 'light' touring: - Buell Amigo tank bag - Buell expandable Firebolt panniers - Bull Firebolt rear seat bag (not a great fit) The Firebolt panniers fit perfectly around the indicators. I have ditched the helmet wires on the rear subframe and replaced them with a bent sections of tin that the pannier straps thread through, this clamps them into place. I cut up the Firebolt metal locating bracket and bolted the two ends to the bottom of the subframe. This secures the bags firmly. They're painted black and don't stand out too much to detract from the look of the bike when the luggage is not in use which is 95% of the time. Good luck with whatever you end up doing. I can't imagine touring two up on a X1. As mentioned above there's other more suitable tuber options to consider.
