I put in a trans from a 97 sportster and put in a baker shift drum all works fine except when shift to 5 th I hit a neutral. I am thinking the shift is not moving the drum far enough to engage the fifth gear. The detent plate is not going over the last hump and sliding all the way down Shift fork? Shift pawl adjust Grind down the hump on the detent some ? |

Had one thought I left the last gear in the trans but used the fifth counter gear that came with the new trans thinking they do not match and will not allow me to shift to fifth ? |

Not looking at the job its hard to say, I would not start hacking at the parts that you are replacing, there is also an adjustment for the shift linkage that may need to be made, as you have disturbed the tranny did you cycle the tranny linkage thru all 5 gears before proceeding or is the bike assembled? |

Put trans in what bike? Early S-2's had a different 5th gear than later tubers--- as did Sportsters up until?. Might even have a note about it on baker site as I read about it when putting Baker 6 speed in an S-2 in instructions that came with trans. |

I am putting a 97 sportster trans in a 2000 M2. If i recall when I tryied to spin the detent from 4th to 5th it would not go past the hump between the two gears. I just thought it was that the gears need to move to mesh to allow the 5th to engage. I am thinking the 5th gears between the sportster and M2 are different that is not allowing the drum to move the forks in place for 5th to engage. This weekend I hope to count the counter shaft teeth for 5th and if they are different for 5th that may be my issue. But correct if wrong but I should be able put the trans in and spin the detent plate to 5th gear. If I can do that it should all work. |

You would probably get better input if you explained the scenario a little better in your original post. Or at least put something in your profile if someone wants to go the extra mile and help. |
