Ok, got the XB sensor installed. Here is a pic for how I connected the ground wire.
The light comes on as expected with the tank near empty (>1 gal of fuel.). If the weather is good tomorrow I will fill it to full and go for a good ride to ensure it works correctly. Just a few notes. I tested the sensor with a resistance test. At room temp it was 900-1000 ohms. Within spec. After the light was on I pulled the connector and tested it. The resistance heated up was 100 ohms. |

Where did you get the clip for the ground wire? Is that a hose clamp? |

Sorry, should have mentioned that. Yes, I used a fuel line hose clamp. Just find one that will fit. I wasn't able to solder to it, for some reason the solder wouldn't stick to it. I think it was coated and that was prevent it. Tried sanding it, but no luck. I just used the clamp to clamp the wire to the body of the sensor. It has a solid connection and the resistance test showed no issues with that. |

Ryan Standard PbSn solder won't stick to aluminum. You need an acid flux(HCl and HNO3) and special solder. Once you get a ball to stick, pop your tinned wire in and voila Z |

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Need to brush up on my soldering. Not to worried about it in the end. The clamp has a very solid hold and the connection is solid. To bad the weather isn't good today, maybe tomorrow. |

Oh, a note. That f***ing snap ring that holds the pump in. I want to b**** slap the person who thought putting that pain in the a** in use. Anyways, you will need a 9" snap ring pliers for that b****. I found mine at Northern Tools. Can't find a picture on them. Anyways, that thing sucks. |

Ok, update. Just got a chance to test it. Filled the tank up and the light goes off as expected. Went for a long ride until it came back on. Comes on as expected. Filled the tank up with 4.2 gal. |

So here is a question. Why isn't there a listing for the 1125? Cheaper than a whole pump assy. Wtf, poor engineering on there part. Nice fix Cataract2, nice to see that us common folk are smarter than they are. |

I'm thinking it was an HD decision I'm betting to make more $. There is absolutely NO reason that sensor could not be replaced. |

More then likely because you have to solder the ground on it is beyond the average harley(spit)tecs skillsThe last time I had my CR at the local dealer they didn't know how to check the oil.Ryan the clip is awesome Mike |

Well, just hoping if anyone else was looking for a permanent, cheaper, fix, they could come across this thread and make use of it. |

Hooray Ryan!! Nice to see this through and a new confirmed solution. As far as H-D, yup $$. Used to be able to order the mech. and elec. parts of the keyswitch separately. No longer. Z |

I phoned my local dealer 20$ and a 4 week wait as the Canadian dist. does not stock Buell parts good thing It.s another 3 months to riding season, thanks again Ryan for doing this for us. |

Could you order it from Surdyke and get it shipped to you? It was $11 from them. (Don't know what the exchange would make it for you.) Also, since today was 19F for the morning temp I decided to see if the phantom light (the one that turns on the fuel light when it's cold out until the bike warms up.) would still happen. When the AT reading 49F I turned the key on for the bike and waited. Thus far no false low fuel light. Will keep an eye and report what happens after my classes begin again as I ride to school. |

Another update. Light is still coming on as expected when fuel is low. Went 25 miles on the light today without running out. Millage was 195 miles. The miles on the light wasn't by choice I should add. Just weren't any gas stations nearby when it came on. |

Where is the fuel pump located? The part I was thinking was it obviously wasn't |

Right rear of the front frame. It's under a plastic cover. |

Another thing..- The early 09 ICs had a bad firmware that also trips the LFL/CEL. I forget the firmware Rev#, but my IC has the bad one. I can't remember the last time I saw the lights, so I guess everybody's happy. Oh yeah, Loretta's at the shop and a low temp of 55 dF... Z |

Yeah, the firmware problem can cause the light to come on when the bike is cold. Seems to go off once the bike temp reaches ~150F. One of those quirks that you have to decide if it's worth worrying about or not. My thing is I just want the light to work like it's suppose to when the tank is truly low. Hence why I opted to replace the sensor when it was no longer in spec. Oh, here's a picture of the location of the fuel pump to help you out Zeus.

So even with the old firmware if you replace the sensor it will fix the problem? I have |

Only will fix the low fuel light not working correctly when you have low fuel. The cold issue comes from the cluster. |

Shawns - this is an issue I encountered thru "infant care" dealings with Buell tech support. I was an early adopter, getting Loretta 18DEC07. I had a 3 or 4 deep e-mail conversation with one of the engineers. He told me of an issue with early firmware where the ECM continued polling sensors after shutdown. During that time, cool down would cause "out of range" events, most common - an LFL(Spec = 800-1200 Ohms, IIRC) and then a CEL to show upon start-up. As soon as the ECM goes closed loop, it realizes the fuel sensor is in range and the DTC resets(lights go out). Then I told him of an issue, with the thermistor sensor for fuel level, where the sensor's resistance drifted "out of range". It would set the LFL/CEL AFTER reaching OpTemp(151 dF) and might or might not go out later. I got a new fuel pump ass'y on warranty because of that problem, then that fuel pump died, so I got another one on warranty... I have a spare.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll tackle that project in a week or so. I just put fork seals in it. I was going to put an EBR ECM in it but after I removed pod, I noticed it already had one The bike only has 8k miles on it and is in great shape. Just a little birthday present to myself |
