I have a M2 with 20K miles. When the bike warms up, and I shift from first to second a lot of times it misses. I just recently learned the way to avoid this is to pull the clutch shift and hold and let the clutch out and then release the sifter. That said I ordered the baker shift drum, new 1st and 2nd gears, new chain tensioner. I also ordered the new style shifter as well. Do folks normally see other gears go bad ? |

Second gear is the most common one to fail. Be sure you get all the chunks of broken drive dog out of the case before re-installing the gear cluster. I had a four-speed Sportster that I had to double-clutch like that. In that case, the gears mis-engaged because the thrust washer was incorrect; i.e., a .030" where a .035" would be appropriate. Side play can be checked with a flat plate that has properly spaced holes for the transmission shafts. It's in the Sportster special tools catalog. |

Not on mine. It was just the 2nd gear pair. Mine hadn't lost any big chunks, it just "mushed" the edges. |

What I do is upshift into second simultaneously with releasing the clutch. It slides in like a butter....Took a little practice but its now like second nature. I also don't always shift 1-2 at real high RPM. I leave that to 2-3 upshifts. That's where these bikes really come alive..... |

this is my extra neutral too. I lift a little firmer going to 2nd, but nothing stupid and I'm ok for days at a time until I forget . . . |
