Ok 99 x1 riding home from work not even 15 mins it dies after i take off on the light. All the lights where diming cuting on and off the engine light would try to cut on but the the whole instrument panel shuts off. I've check all fuses their all good I loosen then wires for the battery and try to reconect but no spark seems like the battery is dead....now the last 2wks on cold start up she been hesitating on that first crank up but at this point clueless on what it can be. Waiting on that tow truck to get here take the damn thing home |

Needs a full battery or it will crank but will not have spark. Check the battery first and then see if the charging system is working is my though |

Ok so the bike would not running if it has a bad battery?? Or if the stator was bad will it just die? |

A bad stator will lead to a bad battery in pretty short order. If it is the stator Accel makes a good replacement. |

If the stator goes bad, the bike will run for a while before the combined electrical loads run it down to the point where it will no longer power the ECM and the coils. Give the battery an overnight trickle charge with a "tender" type charger and see if it runs. If it does, you probably have a charging issue. I would say unplug the speed sensor, but since you said there were no blown fuses, it is unlikely that the speed sensor is the problem. |

Well batter is dead for sure.. I think is one of those cheap refurbished junk the dealer I bought it told me they chNged plugs fluids wich they never did so i got a good feeling that battery probably old just clean lol. Now how much of a job is the stator replacement? |

You'd want to make sure the stator is toast before you remove the primary cover, clutch assembly and crank sprocket nut. Once you get a new battery take a voltmeter and see what kind of output you're getting. Failing that, remove the primary chain inspection cover and smell the oil. There's no mistaking that burnt stator smell. |

You could hook up jumper cables from your car battery to the battery on the bike and measure the voltage across the battery with the bike running. If you get anywhere around 13.7 volts then the stator is fine. Simple enough. If you can't get the bike to run then you have a whole different set of issue to deal with. |

I'd check the ignition switch. They are known to go bad and the symptoms you describe could be caused by a bad switch. Barry |

First things first. Most auto parts store will check your battery for free, including a load test. Charge it up and have it checked. If the battery is good, start the bike and check voltage at 2kRPM. It should be in the 13.7 range, as Kalali says. If not, then start through the charging system. The service manual is your friend. Hope this helps, Dave |

If you use your car battery to test the charging system, DO NOT run the car while the bike's key is turned on. You did check the battery terminals for torque, didn't you? Checking the stator output is easy. Unplug the connector going to the VR (near the front of the shock), check both terminals for shorts to ground, start the bike and check the AC current between the pins. You need twice what the DC draw is; 25 - 54 volts as you rev from idle to 2K. If you need to change the stator it is not a big deal. Just remember the clutch basket is reverse thread on that 30mm nut. Four torx screws and it lifts off. Use the special tool to prevent the chain from turning while you break torque on the drive sprocket and clutch basket nuts. |

Yeah, definitely check the ignition switch if the battery checks out ok. |

Did you give it new circuit breakers? If they fail they can give those symptoms. They're in the fuse box, and Harleys use them so they are available. |

No harley elf I did not give it circut breakers I did hear them them click on and off yestarday. I will take the battery tomorrow to get it checked out..I just recently replaced the ignition switch. Is the repair manual available to view online?? |

When I replaced my 96S1 ignition switch a couple years back, I used an aftermarket one. pre-installation testing showed two of the wires were color reversed. |

The 96/97 X1 service manual is on BWB in the knowledge vault manual section. The 1999 wiring diagram is there, too. The circuit breakers can sometimes respond to having their terminals sanded or being swapped. Got an old car headlight lying around? The Flintstone method of checking your battery is to see if it can stay bright for a minute. Next thing is to check the connection of the ground strap to the frame. |

ok so took the batt to the parts store had it tested..and its good accourding to the test paper it has 98crank amps not sure if that good enough but it shows 12.84 volts..so I put a ignition switch from ebay 2 months ago so I am goin to check that out now as soon as I find my tester any other idea guys. |

By pass your SIDE STAND SWITCH !!! ie: run a safety pin through the two wires ... |

ok this is what the bike is doing as of now..all your hear is a click and that's it it will click click and fade away the relays make their noise the starter click but then then it like it goes blank, the fuel pump cuts on..so I am borrowing my friends battery charger to see maybe the batt doesn't have enough crnking amps or the starter is shot?? but as soon as I get a hold of a safety pin I will by-pass the kick stand switch too and try that cause she did shut off after take off |

Ok just put the battery in the slow charger. Its say its charged so I'm going to leave it over night..but the bike all it does is a click then the breakers make their little noise..tomorrow ill bypass the kick stand switch but if that don't work I think the starter might be the bad one..wich still does not explain why the bike died when i went from 1st to 2nd and was at 35mph then it acted like it had a dead battery but the battery was good according to the parts store it had a 12.8 volts man this is a headache |

You have either a bad ground or a bad circuit breaker. |

Harleyelf..I jumped the starter and nothing does not move at all..im trying not to remove the starter but it seems that's the issue and it blows |

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. If it doesn't turn when jumped, it is toast. DBElectric sells American-made high quality starters for a good price. |

ok today I hooked the jumper cables to my car and then to the battery conection on the bike.. the starter turns but is not very strong and the bike did not start now it turns but very weak so I am guessing is not enough to start the bike..it still will hesitate to turn same thing it did before it stop turning last week, so my guess is still the starter. |

If everything is tight I'd clean the solenoid plunger contacts and try again. I removed the contacts and plunger and used a vinegar and salt solution to clean the copper followed by a rinse and dry. You can access the plunger and contact without having to remove the starter, just remove the three small screws on the back. Don't forget to remove the battery from the circuit first. |
