I have aquired a 2000 x1 lightning
New to buells. And motorcycles. No bike ever caught my eye like a buell they are ugly, mean, unrefined, grumpy, misanthropic, abominations...all in a good way lol

Read the back story on erik buell and harley davidson. Talk about getting screwed over!

Anyways I wanted a bike. I was getting tired of my cobra mustang and my turbo eclipse. And didn't have intentions of getting a bike this powerful. It just kinda landed in my lap

Never rode a bike before (maybe a dirtbike like 9 years ago)

Worst first bike ever haha. I'm probably gonna park the buell for a while and pick up a small 250 and learn before I get back on that thing. You breathe on the throttle and it tries to take off to the moon. Anyone have any ideals or tips about riding a bike like this I'm 6'2" 170lbs if that's needed info

You have made the best decision - get a smaller tamer bike to learn on. These are ornery old bikes, instant torque, wheelie machines and are not the best bikes to learn on.

Two excellent choices. First the Buell, second the smaller bike to get back in the groove.

Don't overlook the Motorcycle Safety Foundation basic riders course. Allows a person to become a rider, as opposed to a 'manipulator of the contols'. Also allows (in most states?) bypassing the test for a motorcycle endorsement, and can lead to insurance discounts.

Welcome, and enjoy! Dave

As the post above, MSF is highly recommended this way you can get good throttle control and find out all the pit falls the easy way.

I think the best first bike is a dirt bike. They are cheap, easy to fix, good motor for their size, and good brakes. A dual sport with road specific tires is a reasonable first choice for the street.
Some more partially solicited advice:
Always wear a good helmet.
Always wear real shoes.
The motorcycle riders course advice above is very good advice.
Do not, under any circumstances, ride aggressively. Give the right of way. Assume every car is going to hit you, have an escape path at every intersection, stopped traffic, congested area, etc. Once you learn to ride you will learn that a bike can get you out of a difficult situation pretty quickly and safely. If you are paying attention when you ride you will also realize that it can put you into some very dangerous situations very quickly.

FWIW: I have 35 years riding experience. 24 years on the road. A large number of those miles spent commuting through the country side (deer suck, except in a stew) and through several cities (Boston, New York, Connecticut, Cincinnati). Riding is a blast. Welcome to the club.
