Was talking with another 1125 rider last week and he was showing me his setup. No top on the airbox, has filter. He'd removed the trim piece at front of airbox cover, by fuel cap. He'd also gone HMK muffler with EBR ECM route. Any thoughts or data on the topless idea? I actually know 3 others with 1125's

The stock airbox setup is pressurized and has a ram air effect at high speeds to provide more power. Taking the lid off only makes the bike louder and reduces top speed.

I though you got a bit more torque at low rpm with the cover off? I know my butt Dyno says there is more power at slower speeds/lower RPM... Definitely easier power wheelies in second and third.... Okay, it is slightly possible that I ride a bit more aggressive because the bike sounds meaner with additional intake noise.... Slightly possible

Until you are at least 100MPH (maybe more) ram air does nothing - there is no real positive pressure to the throttle bodies.

I poked around badweb for more info on removing the inner air box. A dude named chameleon (he had/has a crazy high mileage 1125R) ran an 1125R on a dyno with inner cover on and then without. He reported increase of 3hp and 4 ft/pounds of torque.

one of his posts reporting gains is here: (actual dyno sheet links are long gone)

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/584282.html

Not trying to say this is a great thing to do to your bike, or even recommend doing it, but it does change the character a bit and is easy to reverse.

Dyno results will lie a bit without the bike physically moving. A fan blowing air towards the bike isn't going to give any pressure, or even remotely close amount of airflow.

Unless you're pushing air into the airbox at the same speed you're dyno testing at, you won't get the effect of the airbox measured properly.

When I pulled mine I got 118hp with a really choppy curve. Wizard of whoah says choppy curve was because of bike not strapped down, but the fat guy sitting on it seemed like enough to me. My butt dyno said the fuelling was wonky at low RPM and I put it back on.

Not definitave without a back to back run, but I didn't "feel" any benefit, but liked the dirtbike intake growl.

It probably does work with a better fuel map or a tuned ECM.

I have a feeling Buell's engineers built the air box like that for a reason. Harmonics is probably one of them.

Butt dynos lie , for sure.

Only way to know how well your mods are helping would be back to back dyno runs.

This sounds like the people with early to mid 70's Chevy Malibu's where they turned over the air cleaner lid to get more power actually they got more intake noise.

Still, every time I see this thread I open it hoping to see a smokin' hot model sitting on an 1125r...

46champ, I remember that air cleaner 'trick'!

What does the 1190 airbox and intake look like? Someone at EBR may have given it a second thought.

OK, here's a couple of photos I took of MY 1125.
On topless airboxes, the thread subject. Way back in the middle ages had a 1963 Chevy with; 409 motor, 2 4 barrel carbs, solid lifters and 3" header pipes. All stock. Ran it with air cleaner cover off. Got a little more power, better gas mileage and reved quicker. Biggest benefit was it ran way cooler, overheating was a problem. And, on a quiet night you could hear those 8 barrels sucking air 3 blocks away.

Wow, that looks like a rather small air filter compared to the 1125.

Kicka666 - How does the ram air inlet compare size wise to the 1125 version? It looks 50% larger.

Danny its probably triple the size @ intake & airbox volume has doubled, the RX will be based on this platform with the carbon canister built into the airbox, not like the RS which is up the front next to the headlight assembly.

A triple size intake for the 1125 would be a nice custom part to have!

kicka666, do you know how the inner airbox lid is secured to the bottom of the airbox? i don't see any screw holes, etc.

Froggy, how is the stock airbox pressurized?

What is interesting is the front intake stack looks like a twin motorcycles raised stack while the rear looks like a standard 1125 item.

I was told that the stack openings were put on different levels to keep them from stealing air from one an other. Wasn't told which one was doing the stealing.
