A buddy of mine has a Moto Guzzi Griso and he wrote to me recently about how he misses his old 1000S which he found more satisfying to ride. There's no issues with the fuel injection, it runs perfectly. This got me thinking as I have two injected Buells and two carbureted Buells. I almost always take out a carbureted bike when I just what to have a fun ride. The injected bikes run fine, there's no problems. Perhaps the fuel injection simply tames the rough edges as they always run right whereas the carbs are an approximation of how things should be. Could it be that people who prefer carbs simply relish the rude ride? I believe that's a line from an old Buell ad from way back when. | ||

If you're talking tubers, the EFI is pretty crude. A carb more accurately meters fuel under a wide range of conditions that the first gen DDFI. The great thing about fuel injection is that it does exactly what it's programmed to do. The bad thing about fuel injection is that it does exactly what it's programmed to do. | ||

Today's EFI is pretty damn reliable, but the older EFI systems, like what's in the tubers? well, not so much. At least you have a chance to fix a fuel issue with a carbed bike on the road. | ||

IMHO, FUEL INJECTION is the best thing to ever happen to engines !!! The NEGATIVE side is they are very sensitive to EXHAUST HEADER LEAKS, INTAKE LEAKS, IMPROPER TUNING("MAPING"), OVERHEATING DAMAGE of PERIPHERAL SENSORS,and DIFFICULTY of getting the CORRECT MAPPING "INFO" !!! Another NEGATIVE side is mapping AIR COOLED engines too "LEAN" !!! | ||

'simply relish the rude ride' Yes! given the choice for a short hop I'll take my 96S1 over my 1125CR every time. In the city the S1 with its gutted D&D has a much greater street presence than the 1125 will ever have. | ||

Beware! People contious of their street presence are more likley to run into the car in front while looking at themselves in the shopfront window reflection. Ive got fuel injected Buells, Carb'd Buells, Fuel injected Moto Guzzi's, carb'd triumphs, carb'd HD and fuel injected HD...love em all! It hadn't occurred to me whether it was a carb or fuel injection that I prefer for a short hop...I think I just pick the bike I want.... I think I prefer the forgiveness in a carb, but I like the crispness in a fuel injection. if both are a little off of "right" I think its less noticeable on the carb for sure.... | ||

Alfau, Thanks for posting that link, great stuff. I think, heck, I KNOW the reason why I like the Buells so much is that they remind me of the older British bikes but with another couple of decades of development behind them. I know during my test ride on an X1W I thought this thing is like a giant Norton Commando, I could get used to this thing and that was the end of life as I once knew it! | ||

the S1 has 102,000 miles and hasn't met the back of a car yet. knock wood! when the guy is looking the other way or on the phone and wanders over a loud bass note is better. |
