I want to replace the sensor with a mechanical guage that I could glance down and view on the S1. I like custom one off pieces and mounting locations for items so lets see 'em. |

I just did one on my S3 last spring I'll try to remember to take some pictures and post them here. It was really easy, and about 75 bucks total in parts and fittings. I used the 1 1/2" Pro Cycle Gauge and Custom Chrome dual oil sender adapter from Dennis Kirk, and an Autometer mechanical gauge install kit from O'Reilly Auto Parts. The kits copper capillary tubing was routed (after inserting it through some vacuum hose to blend in) along the frame, meeting up with the wiring harness bundle under the tank, and following through to the dash. I painted the chrome bezel of the gauge with bedliner paint to match the black plastic dash color, and drilled a mount hole with a hole saw next to the clock. The hardest part was doping up a u shaped bracket to go between the fitting at the back and the dash. The gauge doesn't come with any brackets and no one seems to sell them in this size either. It looks like it belongs, until night, when the lack of illumination makes it noticeable by omission. (suggestions to get it lit?) The soft copper broke at the motor fitting within a week, squirting oil all over my leg and boot. The nice thing was the gauge immediately went to zero pressure, and I killed the motor to save it.(Probably why we want a gauge in the first place) I solved that issue with a 8-10 inch grease gun hose from Northern Tool between the dual outlet, and the copper compression fitting I relocated to the frame. No issues related to oil pressure since the hose install. I really like having it along with the dummy light as a redundant safety. |

I got into this about 4 years ago, looking for a gauge to suit my TVR. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable but what a surprise to find hundreds and hundreds of different gauges. I was spoilt for choice, the the laptop died and I lost my favourites I'd bookmarked. Not looking forward to searching again. Re Buells. I'd assume an oil damped gauge would suit and aid against vibration. On my old Triumph chopper there was like a dome nut on the timing cover which had a small roundhead pin which popped out when pressure was up - and you looked down to see. Simplicity back then lol, but it worked. Rocket in England |

i been riding barleys since late 70's, never used an oil pressure gauge yet. oil pressure not that important, just as long as oil pump working, as they use roller bearings not car type bearings. |

And Rocket, you are correct, it is (mineral?) oil filled, NOT glycerin. If you look closely you can see the two products don't mix inside the gauge. That's what I get for believing everything I read on internet forums. |
