Bike is a 99 X1 Lightning. The fuel injection is crap. It surges like crazy and wants to be either on or off. I have heard of people changing to a carb instead. Is this something way too expensive to do or is their a fix for the FI? |

First the disclaimer: the Buell FI system is the only one I have any real experience with. Switching to a carb can be done, and several here have done it. One problem with the FI system is that it seems to be 'sensitive' to less than ideal information from its various sensors. So, IF the fuel injectors are not flowing correctly, or IF the intake seals are leaking, or IF the cam position is not up to par, running issues ensue. Same with things like corrosion on the fuse or relay contacts, or a weak or corroded ground or contact with the battery cables, ect. The calender can be every bit the enemy of a machine as abuse or neglect. Might do to check those sorts of things. Can't hurt; might help. Surging is usually a fueling issue, tending towards lean. And on or off sounds like the ECM is going from closed loop to open loop and back. Do you know what your AFV (adapted fuel value) is? It should be somewhere around 100, give or take. In my case, a reset to 100 wouldn't last long, with the AFV going back to the mid 80's. Turned out the rear injector was leaking slightly, fooling the O2 sensor into thinking the mixture was too rich. All of which is a long way of saying the fuel injection system does work fine, if all of its bits and pieces are happy. Hope this helps, Dave |
