Detent plate is a troublesome little piece of equipment, and it causes above mentioned symptoms, including the heartache. |

X1, my last post was not about name calling at all. It's about listening to your frustration then me getting frustrated because you don't appear to take the advice given. Have you taken the cable off and started from the handlebar down inspecting all of the components as advised? I don't care if you say they look fine. This misses the point. You've got a problem you're trying to solve on a forum. The only right way for that to happen is for you to do everything necessary and report back. My ramp advice I said "for example", but you're convinced it's fine because it's only done 15000 miles and you can see three ball bearings. Mine played up years ago, with I'm guessing now, less than 5000 miles on it. My ramp advice stands true still. Strip it and inspect it and put it back together serviced! Ditto the lever/perch, cable/ adjusters. Eliminate them from the process. Why? Because they're simple to do and cost nothing, and can be signed off as not a problem if they are not. Eventually you will get to where you need to go. If this place is beyond your capability, at least you know you have done all you can. You have serviced all the other relevant components, and what's left to do will keep your costs down if having to pay someone else (providing they trust in what they find if they need a preliminary inspection of the work done by you to make sure they can trust in your competence). Yes many times and still to this day I get pissed off when things go wrong unforeseen. Then you say you had just posted you were going to follow my advice. No you did not. You said I guess I am going to just have to take it apart again see if I missed anything, which came across to me like you are stripping the clutch out again, and I'm thinking why. And why the ferook is this guy not listening! Then you said check the sale section! Yes right there you got me. All frustrated again, lol. Anyway, I apologise if I upset you. It is equally frustrating, all be it not in the same way you're suffering, to sit at the keyboard and feel you want to scream out at someone in an effort to help them. Let's not get clouded by emotions and see if we can get you going again. There are two concerns here as your comments seem a little contradictory on a couple of occasions. It might be just the way I'm reading but I'm tired of going over your comments lol. You have a selection issue in first gear but you also said somewhere that the clutch is not disengaging the transmission. I assume the latter you have established without the bike running and just pushing it up and down? Well the next thing you need to do is follow Harleyelf's advice and check the final drive pulley. Once done you should do the other stuff suggested, then we'll proceed from there. Hope this clarifies and helps Rocket in England |

It might be that stupid effing piece uh crap clip on the detent plate like Alfau said. Yank the cover off and take a look and if that clip is all mangled or popped off you need to set the shift drum pins to the same height (it's in the manual), shoot them multiple times with contact cleaner and compressed air and then hit each pin with a drop of Green Loctite. Do the same thing with the new clip. "The Sportsters never have this problem..." Is it due to the rubber mounting or HarLee sending their seconds to the Buell pile? Who can say for sure. You're going to need a beat primary cover with the cut outs and the correct drill bit to set the shifter when you're done. I had this happen twice on my original X1W, never on any of the other Buells. I must not have gotten the pins clean enough for the Loctite to set the first time. How could Willie G. let this happen? (Yes, I know that Willie G. had nothing to do with it but we'd blame him for everything at the dealership back then for a laugh). |

There is a VERY BIG DIFFERENCE in the way SPORTSTER and BUELL riders RIDE !!! That is why th PRIMARY CHAIN has to be adjusted at 3/4 inch on the chain tight spot and the DRIVE BELT adjusted CORRECTLY !!! "AND" the BUELL engines have to have the -06 OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR !!! "PLUS" if there is a WEAK PART SOMEWHERE a BUELL rider will bring it to light as in the CLUTCH SPRING PLATE !!! |

It would have been good to know because his problem reminded me of a similar one I had years ago, as I'd mentioned earlier in the topic, but I've forgotten what mine was. 14 years and counting of Buell ownership will do that to a hard core mechanic, lol Rocket in England |
