The bike is stock except for a air filter and a vance and hines exhaust. The bike backfires consistently whenever I let off the throttle while cruising. When I pull in the clutch to shift up it backfires. Downshifting it backfires.

Anyone else have this problem How do I fix it?

Please look at the intake seals and replace them and coat them with a sil-glyde compound first.

Also check where the exhaust pipe fits to head is sealing as if exhaust gasket leaking or the pipe is a loose fit they will do that.

My m2 is stock with a v&h muffler.
Had to rejet my carb and it cured all my backfires. Runs better than ever actually.

Increased small jet 1 size and shimmed the needle with 2 or 3 small washers. Didn't even have to remove the carb.

Also check to see if you have any packing left in the "muffler"...

Is it backfiring only when you lift? On the gas it does not?

Mine does the same dang thing but found if I run it with the choke slightly on it doesn't do it so I'd say the jetting is the issue and mine will at cruising speed

If the choke makes it run better (stop back firing), it is definitely lean.
This is the reason I like a manual choke because it has helped me limp home on several occasions.

Increase the slow (small) jet 1 size (stock should be 42, so go to 45). Will make you, your bike, and the people around you much happier.

Buellistic wrote/has a OEM CARB Class 101 so just send him a pm to request.

Tuning carbs is not rocket science or all that difficult but it can take several attempts to get it right. EZ helped me a few years back and I will forever be grateful.

I can tell you from personal experience, the $5 jet and $3 air cleaner gasket was the best money I spent to date.

You may want to check exhaust gaskets.

Could be several things:
"Keihin Cough"....cured by jetting up in some cases (or chucking the Keihin in the gravel and bolting on an HSR, as I did...)
Leaking induction seals
Exhaust leak
Bad VOES switch
