Hello All! Well I'v invested in my second Blast. I have a 2000 Buell with about 16,000 miles on it. Well loved but now I can't get the darn thing to start I had it running really good for the past couple weeks. Then it rained. awesome. After that it didnt really start up just right. The timing cover was missing when I bought it and I havent been able to get my hands on another one so it has been uncovered for a couple weeks. I have already checked Das Boot and I replaced the battery with a GelPack so it can be set on its side in the blast. I can crank the motor and I get compression and the starter spins, but then it starts to grind. There is the starter clicking as it turns, then it will give sharp grinding after. And this is a different sound than the dead battery clicking you usually get from the starter. I almost got it to start, but died right away. The ignition mod is blinking when turning over. Any help in diagnosing this would be awesome! |

Well, if this truly all started after the rain I would check for a bad connection, usually the ground cable or battery cable. If its "grinding" it has nothing to do with ignition or carb (so please stop anymore replacing parts). Its a mechanical issue. The second issue is the engine filled with water. Usually only possible with non-stock components or it was left in a really weird place such as under a water spout or on its side. But again, if it truly did start after the rain, thats what I'd check first. If possible see if you can bump start it. You may need a friend or hill to do this if you're not familiar with "bump starting" as it can be tricky and you wouldnt be the first person to be found flopped over your bike on its side. It must be started in 2nd or 3rd gear. If you try it in first gear the rear wheel will just lock up. |

I checked both connections. They are both clean and have a good connection. It was not on its side. Just in the rain. I had it running after the rain, so im not sure if that would be the issue. It started the week after the rain. I just thought that information could be relevant. She starts on a full battery with a shot of starter fluid (BAD I KNOW) but after it is warmed up, i can kill the engine and it starts right up once its warm. I know the boot is fine, but that cold start drains batteries fast. Just cant get it going when she is cooled off. It will only grind when holding the starter button for more than 3-5 seconds. Then it starts till I drain the battery cranking it |

Change the slow jet to a #45 and the main to a 170 (if not done already). Unplug the TPS/auto enrichener and see what happens. The bike should start to run rich and "lope" after its warmed up (lope at idle, bike should run fine at all other speeds)If it doesn't and runs normally, the AE is toast. Find the headlight plug. It's about 6 inches down the wiring coming out of the headlight housing. Unplug it when starting, to save the battery until you fix the hard start problem. DON'T FORGET TO PLUG IT BACK IN BEFORE RIDING!! |
