The buyer for my Uly flew in and swapped the head gaskets, throttle body gaskets and after reassembly, now it barely runs, stalls, stumbles and is blowing carbon out the can. All electrical connections have been checked, we sprayed carb cleaner around the throttle body to check for leaks, cleaned the plugs and did a TPS reset. No change. I'm out of ideas. Any thoughts? |

Is it possible the connectors for the injectors are swapped? |

It is not much help Red but all I can suggest is that you go through all the parts to check all is good. Why was this work done anyway. |

Could you have missed a ground strap somewhere? Did you do the TPS reset with the idle knob turned all the way out? |

Grounds are good, TPS reset was done properly. I still think it's a leak at the intake so we're in the process of rotating the engine again to check out the TB. I could only spray portions of the TB while it was running due to space. So I'm not ruling out the air leak yet. |

My bike had a slight head gasket leak on the front cylinder. Instead of riding it home as is, he wanted to put in a new set before leaving. |

Sounds to me like a valve adjustment/ pushrod problem. Can you do a compression test to see if the valves are all closing properly? Intake and exhaust push rods are a little different in length. |

And did you allow the hydraulic tappets to bleed down fully as you rebuilt it? if not you may have bent a valve cracked a valve guide etc if the engine was turned over before they bled down. |

If my stash can be of any help let me know (I'm a couple of hours away). I have some XB9 tappets, an XB12 crank position sensor, CPS rotor cup, and a few other odds and ends. |

Thanks Reepicheep, I appreciate the offer and thanks to all the rest of you for the info. I'm not sure what was done with the head. He was wrenching away in the garage while I was dealing with some server upgrades at work. He ended up getting a UHaul and heading home. Am I still allowed to hang out on BadWeb even though I'm Buell-less? =] |

How many head gaskets were in the kit? A long time ago I was screwing a motor back together and a buddy said, Hey, those gaskets look funny and sure enough, they were 883, not 1200... Is it possible he has XB9 gaskets in there? |

That's a good thing, then! If I had put that head on with the 883 gaskets that would have sucked!!! |

With the puking carbon out the exhaust sounds like it was way rich----head temp sensor is really only thing that will do that. |

Head temp sensor will throw a code if it's the issue, and it doesn't read incorrectly when hooked up to ecmspy. Been sick so I haven't had much time to work on it. |
