Hey guys. I am new to Buell. I bought a 1999 X-1 with 10,000 miles. The only mod is a Vance & Hines muffler. It is running great, but intermittently when I try to start it, I flip the kill switch and the red light does not come on (OR sometimes the light faintly comes on and appears to be flickering) and I don't hear the injection priming. I can attempt to start it (which doesn't work) and flip the kill switch a while and eventually the light comes on. I put a new battery in it yesterday and still have the issue. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

FUEL PUMP does not spin up: BAD FUEL PUMP and/or BATTERY and GROUND to FUEL PUMP ... Get the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and PARTS BOOK that you should have for your YEAR/MODEL BUELL to trouble shoot the problem ... When you buy a NEW BATTERY you should put it on a charger for 24 hours because you have no idea how long it has set on the shelf before you bought it !!! If it is the FUELL PUMP which is out of a 2003 FORD V6 PN 317-365 KPA(46-43 PSI @ schrader valve) or AUTOZONE E2366 ... (Message edited by buellistic on August 24, 2013) |

Buellistic, I appreciate the suggestions and info. I was hoping to trouble shoot a little more before I spend cash on a new fuel pump. When I can get the light on the red tach to light come on it fires right up and runs great, so I don't think the fuel pump is toast yet. I checked the ignition fuse and its good. I can hear a clicking in the fuse block when I flip the kill switch back and forth. It is taking more and more times of flipping the kill switch back and forth to get the light to come on and fuel pump to prime. |

It could be a loose/exposed wire or could very well be the fuse itself I would look at the owners manual and make sure there is the correct fuse in the slot and then replace it anyways with a fresh one just to make sure. Then if your really handy you could get into tracing the wire from switch to pump and make sure those are good |

After you get the service manual, check the backside of the ign switch for signs of overheating. Your bike is old enough that the switch may be in near fail mode. The red light is the Check Engine Light, or CEL. The fact that it is not coming on or is flickering is a sign of an electrical problem. Try swapping the relays one for the other. The clicking is the relay closing and opening again. Most likely the problem. And confirm that both ends of the battery cables are tight and no corrosion. Check every ground you can find. Hope this helps, Dave |

After just posting I walked into the garage, switched the relays, turned on the ignition, flipped the kill switch and the CEL came on and stayed red. The bike fired right up!!! Thanks for your help! Is the second relay just a back up? Are these relays common (carried at Napa or Autozone) or a HD dealer specific item? |

Take the RELAY to them and they will read the numbers on the part which would cross reference to the part ... |

"Is the second relay just a back up?" No. You need all the relays to work properly. H-D and back up don't go in the same sentence.... |

I had the same problem with my x1. It was the clutch safety switch.. |

Glad it is fixed and the solution was simple. Might do to replace both relays and get a spare or two. To answer the other part of your question, the relays are identical, but one is not a spare. One relay is dedicated to the ignition system, the other is dedicated to accessories: the lights, turn signals, ect. |

One thing I have always done is turn on ignition, click run switch to run, then wait for the CEL to go off before starting. I was told this allows the electronics to go through its self-check before start up! YMMV Barry |
