As a background, I bought this bike and found that the PO was a little lacking in providing full disclosure. Then again, I don't think he rode it much. The bike shifted very poorly. I missed a shift often. I reset the chain tension, replaced the fluid, and joined the S2 Gathering in Arkansas last year. Shifting wasn't any better and I was afraid I had a tranny problem. Talking to Bluzm and Frank they pointed me to the shifter - likely the posts were bent. I have a feeling the posts are fine...
The owners of bike I bought last fall don't remember changing the c-clip in that bike. I'm reconsidering taking the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach! |

Best fix is to drill and tap 10-24/32.
BTW, I enjoyed the S2 gathering last year, it was a HOOT! Saturday morning coffee with Roger!LOL

Maybe a shirt the next size up would have been better... As far as the shifter drum, does the screw just keep the plate in place in the event of another c-clip failure? I'm having trouble seeing what that gets you. Having never pulled the tranny before I'm a little leery about going that extra mile without good reason. |

That's almost comical. Shouldn't be too tough to fix. And it was great meeting you in AK last year. |

Ok, I' probably shouldn't be posting because I'm still high on meds from hernia surgery, but are my blurry eyes seeing what I'm seeing?? The darn piece completely fell off?! |

Yep, you're really seeing that. It's not the meds. That's what Roger meant when he spoke of the C-clip. Maybe a bit of safety-wire is in order after reassembly? Or the 10-24 trick...yes, the theory with the screw is it, and a washer, will retain the plate in place of / in addition to the C-clip. You're lucky your primary chain didn't eat that for lunch...! |

"You're lucky your primary chain didn't eat that for lunch...!" Sure looks like the back of the clutch basket was having its way with it. |

Roger, I have seen that pattern on the shift cam before. I just might have one laying around here somewhere... Actually I have two of them, one from a Sportster and one from my Cyclone. If you don't have time to do the JRamsey fix, just tap the pins back in till they bottom then put on a new shifter plate. Makes a world of difference. Don't forget to use the service manual procedure to set the shift lever. The advice to "not reuse the clip" is accurate. They are cheap and not worth messing with.. |

Yes the clip is garbage. What was HD thinking?. Do the screw fix. If you need it drilled and tapped i can help you out for cheep.i did mine, and it shifts so much better, and i have confidence it is secure now. |

Shifter cam! That's how long it took me to remember the name of the part. Yowza! |

I actually bought the bike that way, not realizing it had a minor shift problem, much less a major one. The drawback of driving 10 hrs for a bike the color you want. If it's in one piece and starts a test drive doesn't seem necessary. The bike was worth it outside of financially (see "S2 Arkansas Gathering"). Now that I see the replacement clip I'm more inclined to do the fix. I thought they had upgraded the clip! |

Can I assume that once it's screwed on, slop becomes nonexistent? And are these the same way on the later bikes? Say, like my S1? |

Made it harder than it needed to be but #305 is back on the road. Didn't pull the shifter pawl - more than just 5 bolts were involved. Fixed a leaky carb and a really off float setting along the way. Replaced clutch cable. I may need to ride it the rest of the season to fine tune the carb and the release it back into the wild next spring. |
