I found a useful youtube video about doing the seal replacement without special tools (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIe1esOIobQ), but, oops, once I had the forks off my '09 I realized that there had been changes in the fork that made much of the video moot. As an aside, I also found that the inner fork tubes are bigger diameter in '09 (probably also in '08), and so the seals are also different (I used All Balls 56-142).

Anyway, I didn't think I'd be able to do the little video trick that obviated the need for a spring compressor. So, being the cheap bastard that I am, I made one from a PVC end cap and a couple ratcheting tie-downs. Worked great, but make sure that the end with the ratchet has a short strap (got mine at Lowes). Next time I may bend the hook ends a little flatter where they hook into the fork spacer tube.

I also realized that I needed a damper rod retrieval tool to draw the damper rod up after the spring/spacer was back in and the spring compressed, and it occurred to me that I could just use a length of cord tied under the jam nut on the rod if I ran it thru the spring and various other pieces while reassembling.
