Hi everyone! Just want to start by saying this is my first post, but I have lurked for a while now. I have been looking for some jetting advice for my '98 S1 Lightning. I bought the bike a few months ago after it had sat in a storage unit for 6 years. I have already done all the maintenance to revive it after her long slumber. The guy I bought it from had put on a Force exhaust (w/o baffles) and a forcewinder intake. He also bout a jet kit and started trying to jet the bike but never finished. He doesnt know what jet kit is it, not can he find it. So I tore the carb apart and bought a rebuild kit for it. It currently has in it a 48 slow jet, 185 main, and an adjustable needle. when I got everything back together, I readjusted the idle mixture to get it idling decent. So now the problem, it runs like crap. I have the needle clip in the middle of the needle. When its cold, its almost impossible to even roll on the throttle without it bogging and dying. Its a little better when it warms up, but still bogs hard when I twist the throttle.Tomorrow I'm going to try to due a full throttle pass, kill it, and check the plugs. Sorry for the long winded explanation, I'm just looking for some advice. As far as whats in the bike for jets, I'm curious if a 48/185 setup is pretty close. A buddy of mine took a video the day I got it running. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KIkGzF4Aog&feature =youtu.be At 12 secs you can me roll on the throttle and the bike gurgle like its rich. But I cant tell whether its to rich or just so lean that its stumbling. Thanks a lot in advance for all the help! |

step up to a mikuni and a dyno tune, your jetting and advance will be perfect. there is a big difference between a butt tune and a dyno tune. I should have done it sooner than I did. |

Ok, I listened to that video multiple times, on my phone, and it's hard to hear for me, but it sounds like its breaking up rather than bogging down. Being that it was sitting and sounds like its breaking up, that leads me to ask if you changed out the intake seals while going through the bike? Also, how was the carb rebuilt? Did you just spray it down or did you actually strip the carb down and soak it in a bucket of carb cleaner, at the very least? |

The carb was taken off and completely torn down. I ordered a full rebuild kit and cleaned the CV till it was better than new haha. As of right now i dont think a mikuni is quite in the budget, maybe over the off season. A dyno tune would do wonders, but that would probably wait until the mikuni is put on. I definitely need to have a look at the intake seals, 6 years in a storage locker probably wreaked havoc on the seals. Luckily the p/o did metal gaskets everywhere else on the bike. I'm planning on checking the intake seals tomorrow with the good old starting fluid test. Do those jet sizes seem fairly close? Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate the input! |

You say it bogs when you open the throttle? Those CV carbs have this rubber diaphragm on the top cover and you have to get it to seal perfectly or else it'll do what you're describing. Take the cover off and wiggle it around as you're pressing it down and make sure the diaphragm is seated right. I did that once and it was WTF? until somebody said take the top off and reseat it. |

Thanks for the tip, diaphragm is definitely seated correctly, but I will double check to make sure there arent any pin holes in it. Also I know its a pretty common mod to cut couple coils off the spring, I can tell that it has been done to this one. Could that cause the needle to raise too quickly and dump too much fuel too fast? |

I dunno, maybe somebody else can chime in. I used to just stick in the DynoJet kits and I believe they came with a different spring but it's been years since I was doing that every day. There should be a jetting guide in the Knowledge Vault but right now I have to put my X1 back together. |

No one I know cuts the CV spring. That may be an issue. 185 is a bit small, might run better with a 190, the 48 may also be a bit large. Most run with a 45 set at 2 1/2 turns If you are at less than 1 turn out, you are too large. Don't even mess with it until you get the intake seals changed. Yours are bad, period. Even sitting they will get hard a leak. Install the new seals and spigot seal using SylGlyde. If your isn't an S1W, it the 185 main might be OK. A 48 pilot is probably too large for a standard Lightning motor. May or may not be for an S1W Thunderstorm motor. |

Bluzm2, Its definitely an S1 not an S1W, however it does have all black heads, no polished fins, which I understand is characteristic of Thunderstorm heads. The intake seals are on order, I agree its not worth even messing around until I know those are new. Also Im wondering if it would be better to buy a few individual jets (maybe a 45, and a 190) and a new spring, or would I be better off buying a full jet kit? Thank you everyone for all the advice! |

I must have missed a few posts. A different spring? If so, sounds like a jet kit and if so, the slide is probably drilled. So buying a new stock spring would cause more problems. If it were my bike/carb, I would take it back to stock-ish. Personally I like a fined tuned carb for the road. If you are on the track, why bother. But that's just me. |

Just ordered a 45 slow and a 46 slow, as well as a 190 main, a new slide spring, intake seals, and a CVP emulsion tube. I hope this get her running a little better haha. |

Beardo, The spring was a stock spring, but it had a few coils cut off, I agree with you, a nice stock-ish setup would be ideal. I dont plan on tracking it ever so I really just want it to run nice. Thanks! |
