So added K&N upgraded air filter and also Rider Comfort Kit .... I live at elevation in the foothills of colorado, around 8000 ft. I was told by a member or two as well as read that I may/will need to get my ECM flashed to get the fan to run right as well as possibly help with the new air flow...... Called a trust Buell/Harley dealer here....High Country..... The service fella told me flashing will make it worse as the mapping is for sea level...... Suggested Screaming Eagle Race ECM upgrade..... Haha.... No way... EBR is and will be my next choice...... I The symptoms....... Runs and starts fine at idle. Runs great on acceleration, hard especially..... Has a surge at steady throttle in any gear at any speed... did elevation changes from 5000 up to 8000+..... No improvement. Bike .....stock ECM, stock exhaust, 2006 X..... K&N mentioned and Comfort Kit...... Thought and help please..... Cheers-Pete |

Re-zero your TPS and do a learn cycle for the EFI. You have changed airflow characteristics and the EFI needs time and data to adapt. I'd have told them to do the Race Tuner (SuperTuner now)...and watched. Woulda been one hell of a show while they tried figuring out why it wouldn't work!! |

Oh, and since you have an 06 - like me - there is no fan logic flash for our ECMs. Bolt on the parts and go; the fan will behave just like it always has. |

Everything Rat said. Ride it with a steady throttle over 3000 rpm. Let it learn |

Remind me..... How do I reset the TPS??? I had to do the EFI relearn when I moved out here 3 years ago.... Man she pooped and coughed on my first ride back then. Back firing on Buell's with the air box up front is a little scary.... Awful loud. Thanks for the help as always.... Good lord I love this bike Cheers-Pete |

Remind me..... How do I reset the TPS??? You'll need ECMspy. Make sure your throttle cables are properly adjusted. Warm the bike to operating temperature. Don't "warm it up"...go for a ride. Get it HOT. Hook up 'spy. Back out your idle adjust cable completely. Open the throttle fully (key on, engine off, obviously), and allow it to snap closed. Give a light "bump" closed to be safe. Click the "reset TPS" button on 'spy. Click "reset AFV" as well. Adjust idle cable until it reads something like 4.7v (check your ecmspy manual to be safe), and start the bike. Adjust as needed until idle speed is 1050. If your RPM's hang up on decel, your idle is too high and you should back out the idle speed a hair at a time until it stops hanging up. Someone will correct me if I missed a step or three...it's been about 15k miles since I did a TPS reset. If it ain't broke...I don't try to fix it |

Thats about right. You can take the air box cover off and look down the throttle body to ensure its 100% closed on a reset if you like as well ie no carbon build up in the body. If you have a bike, like the 06, without the idle valve you WILL need to do the TPS reset every now and then as it does drift over time/use. It is also critical for a good idle on these bikes. It is either a dealer or DIY job. So get the cable and ECM-SPY or other to do it as you will need it and its cheaper than a dealer doing it anyway. Its not hard once you get the hang of it either. The 06 bikes do, in my opinion, run a bit lean from stock. Mostly in the low (1200 rpm) to mid (3000 rpm) rev range. You should, at sea level, have no problem with just the filter. The XB bikes do not have a barometric pressure sensor. It uses the AFV but you can fit one, as I understand, if needed. Ref to the ECM-SPY page. Use ECM-SPY or other to check that your sensors are giving the ECM the right numbers as well. The AFV is set to about 80 to 110 but you can change it if needed. One thing to know, in my opinion, is that with a change of can, air filter or even a big change in air temp it can take a long time for the ECM to adjust its self. Thats what all that "run it for 20 min at a steady throttle" is all about. I get it all the time and can tell it from the change in power and the sound from my open can. DDFI-3 is a lot better than DDFI-2 (06 bike) but still a bit slow for FI. Its not a problem once you know about it but otherwise it can confuse any possible fueling/running issues. The worse one being trying to get your TPS right. I know I have had this problem and it can drive you nuts. |

Ratbuell Posted on Sunday, June 09, 2013 The TPS voltage will most likely be higher than 4.7v when idle speed is adjusted to 1050~1100 RPM. |

Try just the re-learn process - 20 minutes at steady throttle. Think "highway on cruise control". The only airflow change you made was the K&N. The comfort kit might as well have been riding into a cold weather front - it cools the engine's exterior, but doesn't change (appreciably) the fuel mix. IIRC, I never did a TPS reset on my 06 when I installed the comfort kit...or changed to a K&N with a freshly drilled inner airbox. I *might* do one as part of my 30k service, coming up soon. We'll see how she behaves after the rest of the service (plugs, wires, etc). |

hold on a minute..... do i need to drill something in the inner airbox???? I did no drilling..... I agree with you Rat this seems very strange... I am tempted to reinstall the regular air filter I kept just in case and see if that is the problem or solves the problem.... I'll try to make a highway run this weekend first.... continued thanks for your continued thoughts on the topic. Cheers |

Strange in deed. My '06 has also had a K&N added, as well as an '07 inner airbox lid (instead of "drilling' or cutting out the '06 since it was cheap). Stock exhaust. i live at 2000ft and run between that and about 6000ft on regular basis with no issues. I added an EBR ECM later, but it ran OK with stock ECM as well. I do TPS resets about every 10k, but have never had a problem like you describe. 30k miles on the bike. wish I could help, but the TPS reset is a good suggestion, and always an easy item to try (once you have the capability, of course). Update.... More for the knowledge vault and others... Problem solved.... Simple, yet boring highway ride.... EFI reset I guess you'd call it.... 10-20 miles at as steady of a throttle as I could in traffic....around 3000 rpm.... Problem solved!!!!! Thanks for all your ideas and help all. Cheers-pete |
