They say it's not if but when. Well my when came Monday morning on the way to work. Two lane road Ts into the highway. Right hand turn with a protected speed up lane. Enter gravel or other slick substance. Not much of the next 30 minutes that I remember. I remember some guys pushing my bike to the side of the road while I walked behind them. I remember one saying gravel and high side. Then they were gone and two police officers had taken their place. I was handing them things out of my wallet. They were gone and my dad was standing there. I came out with a mild concussion and sore muscles. I need a new helmet and some bike parts. I cannot stress enough after this event how much good gear is worth. I do not care if it is 200 degrees out and all you have is a 3 inch thick leather suit, wear it! If you are too hot in good gear, get different gear, don't ride or don't complain about skin grafts. On another note, if anyone has a 99 x1 headlight bezel, just the chrome ring, or a left side foot peg mount, I'm in the market. Everything else has been ordered and I really don't want to pay a fortune to "Dave the Buell killer" |

any mistake you walk away from and learn from is a good lesson... bikes fall over, often not when we're ready for them. Good ta hear you're OK bikes can be fixed, bodies take longer |

Glad you're able to write about it. ATGATT. The other lesson here is, scan your surface carefully especially in accel lanes, decel lanes, and corners. There is a reason gravity is a "law" and not a "suggestion" |

Glad to here you were ok. I second the protective gear! When I went down a year ago not one scratch on my body or head! Had to have shoulder surgery but that was coming anyway the accident just spead it up |

Glad you pulled through too Jake. Me and a friend rode out to Columbus WI Monday morning as we have off all week for plant shutdown (scheduled maintenance). I was lead, all back roads, and was getting my '99 X1 to do some nice cornering. We came upon a spot where the road ahead looked to go through a distant farm after a sharp left-hander. I've not ridden this road before. Next thing I know is the road is covered with semi-hard cow dung from one of the barns. Around here, that is a common experience this time of year. I slowed down and looked as far ahead as line of sight would allow. All was good. We were having so much fun we passed Columbus and did not realize it. There are a couple of roads around here, pretty much 90 degree sweepers, where I used to see gravel right in the middle of the corner, across both lanes. I used to wonder how in the world that got there as there wasn't a driveway coming off the roadway there (and not rain washout either). Don't see it this year and wonder if someone got caught in the act or they simply moved as it was not natural for the gravel to be there. |

Yikes! Very glad things were not any worse. And get with your health care professional about recovery from a concussion. Not something to mess about with. As to the chrome rim, PM me. If a 67992-97Y will work, I have one in my parts stash . . . . Dave |

Thank you all for the get wells. I am very lucky and will be a better rider for it. Neighbor is now pushing harder than ever for me to get rid of this hot rod and buy an older BMW. After all they are safer and more reliable and easier to work on and ... I will not abandon my bike. That is too much like admitting defeat. It is not the bikes fault. Luckily my wife is 100% supportive and encouraging. |

I also sometimes wonder if a less "aggressive" bike would be a safer choice but I always go back to my old thinking that it is the rider that should gauge the conditions and never overestimate their riding skills. A hot headed person would as easily get in trouble in a 250cc motorcycle as they would in a high powered machine like an X1. |

I agree. It is all in how you approach and respect it. I have not been riding long (9 years) but this is my first incident and I know some people go nearly their whole lives without one so I think as long as you are a safe rider you can be safe one whatever you ride, but if you are not, it doesn't matter what you ride. |

I almost did this yesterday!!! Went for a quick ride through the twisties a few hours before my wedding and damn near crashed!! Tight 160 degree turn at the bottom of a tight short drop of a small hill, leaned hit, hit the apex, accelerated out... Lost the rear end... Have never lost footing on a buell!! It was almost a low side that could have high sided!!! Mine was a combination of gravel and probably right on the edge of needing a new tire...... It was a close call! |

I might have a left side peg mount, PM me if you still need one and I will dig through the parts collection. If I do it will be off a 99X1... Will that work? If it does you can have it, I'll even cover shipping to get it to you. |

Fasstcar, I've high sided my "sedate" 2004 BMW r1150r recently, so I don't think that type of bike is gonna help. Although hard bags are great crash bars, just a tad bit expensive. Just need to remember pick the bike up in the corner then apply throttle, at least on the street. Remember, this is from a guy who did the same thing, so the advice is questionable I was wearing the aerostitch, it took a beating but I walked. Rode the bike away also, and 550 miles the next day. Glad to hear you walked. Good luck next time out. Go do a track day or two, you learn a ton there. |

Hahahahaha sorry Lowroad, not you. I was trying to throw a word play in there because I am really pretty cheesy. Mbsween, Thanks, I think I will go to a track day. We have a pretty nice track here in Portland that I used to race at (cars) but haven't been on in a long time. |
