Time to pay 'the man' and I notice that my uly is worth a lot according to the city Their assessed value matches nada list price but the nada retail is less than half if list price. Me thinks a list price would be irrelevant on a 6 year old bike.
What the heck!?! I plan on disputing this Anybody else 'been here' or 'done that'? |

Is this for paying a one time sales tax on the vehicle for titling purposes? If so, to my knowledge in many/most states, if you present a notarized bill of sale showing the purchase price, that value overrides any NADA or other price directory for assessment of sales tax. |

You probably got a break on purchase tax (list price), so this is their excuse to "make up" for lost revenue. MD is 6%, no PPT. VA (we get a lot of VA customers) is 3%, with PPT. They getya either way... |

Sounds like another town reaching to make up revenue. Dispute that. |

Varies by locale, I'm sure. NC uses something like KBB wholesale. When you register the vehicle the road use tax is 3% of that and then annual property tax rate is wildly variable by county or city. I live outside Greensboro and the county rate is half that of the city...which is why I moved to the county. When they did revaluations on real estate recently a lot of people protested the new values, but the dif in property tax between a house and a bike is such that I don't think it would be worthwhile to butt heads with them on the bike, at least for me. |

Nallice- I ran into a similar problem in SC when I lived up there when I bought my CR they wanted to charge me for a 12.5K bike but I got it fire sale and only paid 6 so I showed them the bill of sale and they fixed it. I think if you take them an appraised value from a dealer they will fix it in there system. |

"Virginia is a Commonwealth not a State" At least that's what the county folks say when I give them my good people fought and died to keep this type of fascism out of my country speech. It is a property tax you pay every year on things from cars to your dog. If it is worth a few bucks they tax you on it. If it is titled to you.You are taxed on it. |

Every year I feel like I'm being penalized for owning things. My awesome wife went in today and handled it for me today. They ended up reassessing it for $3500. Still feel like I'm taking it up the rear when all my vehicle taxes total up to $750 |

Glad you got it adjusted. When I moved to NC and first had to deal with personal property tax (I think it is 1% of value annually), it was a big change vs the midwest. I also found they had mis classed my bike. Since the original FL title said "HD" instead of Buell, they gave it something like a $12K value for a 2 year old bike! I just assumed all Buells must have a "HD" title, but it turned out to be a mistake. I then had to go to a special police state inspection location so that an officer could "certify" that I, indeed, had a Buell and not a HD. That dropped the assessed value to be in the same ballpark as a KBB or other used value guide would say. Actual sales receipts don't matter, as they have their own look up tables. Now NC plans to start charging you the property tax at time of registration, instead of the county sending you a separate tax bill. Guess they didn't like waiting for their money or having some folks not pay, but still get their registration for the year. Over complicated system... |

Arkansas has yearly property tax, but it's fairly reasonable and adjusts for the vehicle getting older. |

Is this tax on vehicles in addition to tag fees? |

Wow this annual property tax on vehicles sounds scary, even downright socialist. Funny how most of the states mentioned who levy this tax are pretty conservative too. I'm guessing that if you add up their other taxes (income, land/house property tax etc) they would come up lower than liberal states who don't have a property tax assessed on vehicles. But who knows? Has anyone done a complete taxation comparison of the states that assess this tax vs those that do not? When I retire I'm leaving the state of Maryland (due to excess taxes/regulations etc) and I don't want to step out of the frying pan and into the fire. |
