There's a cheap 883 on clist from a 97 sportster Would this bolt up , and is the bottom end the same, if I swapped pistons jugs, heads, and cams do I have a real engine. Crank is the same right? |

It would be pretty doable to hop up the sporster to near-Buell spec. Or are you asking if the sportster engine would fit in a tuber frame? |

Yes. The only differences are pistons, barrels and heads around that year. |

Same as what? Depends on year. Lighter flywheels in the Lightnings. I seem to remember reading something was different on some transmission's ratios (5th). Crank bearings changed in 2000 (I think). What are you specifically trying to do and what year bottom end are you replacing? |

Stroke is the same, bolt pattern is the came. 883 heads have smaller combustion chambers, so don't mix those onto normal 1200 pistons and jugs. You will end up with a compression ratio far too high for gasoline. Wiseco made a set of dish top pistons that allows use of those heads on 1200cc barrels. |

Greg, Tod said '97 and as I said... post 2000 there was some more changes but gearboxes the same. both had an upgraded shifter detent plate. both sportster and buell motors from 2000 had a pressed in crank. There was other upgrades in 2000 as well but the upgrades to the bottom end were the same apart from the lighter crank in the S3/X1's post 2000 Pre rubber mount / XB the motors are fully interchangeable including fitting pre 2000 cranks in post 2000 motors, although the lifters are a different size and the cam profile is different but the cams are still interchangeable with the correct pinion gear. Although as said, there's a few tricks like be careful of compression ratios with 883 heads on a 1200. |

I am fairly sure that Buell engines had a larger size rear (4) engine bolt holes to mount them. |

I'll check that later Bert, have an X1 I'm about to pull the swingarm off as well as an S3 on the engine stand and pre and post 2000 sporty cases. The front head mount bolt is a different size too but I figured he was only looking to use the bottom end. |

I am just planning on using the bottom end, i have both a 99 m2 frame and a x1 frame... And almost a bikes worth of parts . To many projects but i now have a 883 minus primary and tranny with 3500 miles. Im thinking carbed x1 , xb heads, i think i have 1250 pistons or jugs we'll see but with a good bottom end im close to a Whole bike in parts Thanks guys I hope the swingarm mounting block lines up |

ya should be able to get a carb in there, may have to play with spacers or maybe different carbs for clearance but I don't think you'll have much issue. |

I have a top end from an 883 sportster here and a lower end from an XB9R... anyone know what size engine this would make with this combo? considered this for a junker/commuter bike (Message edited by deanh8 on June 19, 2013) |
