Hey Guys, I've just recently bought my first Buell, a 2003 XB12r with Micron exhaust and K&N filter.
I'm living in Japan and the bike has to go through it's safety check which is every 2 years. With the Micron pipe it won't pass the inspection so I have changed back to the original system. The previous owner said the ECM has been remapped and he has given me a C.D with the stock and race map and also the cable so I can plug into a laptop.
What I'm trying to find out is will it be possible to pass the emissions test and will the bike run O.K with the stock exhaust combined with the race map on the ECM?
I will be going back to the Micron system after the test but to be honest I'm a bit nervous playing around with the mapping so hope I don't have to change it unless I really have too. I believe I will have to do a TPS reset which I think I can manage.
Any advice will be really appreciated.
Cheers
Dave.

I know you said it is a safety check, but do they test anything emissions related at all? If so you will need to put the ECM back to stock.

Otherwise, just swap the exhaust back, then be done with it. It will be running too rich for the stock exhaust, but given that it is only temporary it won't be a big deal.

Swapping the Micron won't be fun, it is a pain to install and remove the header without rotating the motor out of the frame. A TPS reset will not be required, as you are not touching the throttle position sensor or reflashing the EEPROM on the ECM.

Also, if that race map is the one for the Buell Race exhaust, you will find that it is still too lean for the Micron system and it will damage your motor. American Sport Bike sells a well developed map that fuels it correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I'm certain there is an emissions test if the bike was built after 2001 but I'll check again. Looks like I'll need to study more about ECMSPY or try to buy a used stock ECM at a reasonable price to swap over.
I'm not sure if the current map is for the Buell Race Exhaust so I'll look into it. The bikes done less than 5000 miles and is in mint condition so don't want to cause any damage.
I've changed the exhaust back which wasn't as bad as I expected and gave me a reason to buy new non-metric tools and a couple of torque wrenches. Also changed the rear wheel bearings and put new front and rear tires on.
Been an interesting experience working on the bike as it's a bit different than the bikes I've had in the past and I'm lucky that theres a site like this with so much info and advice. Thanks.
