Can anyone help please!? My clutch is dragging..I have renewed the cable and the bearing on the adjusting screw, topped up th oil but it STILL drags!! it seems that after adjusting the cable and then starting up the bike all seems OK the first couple of times..I put it in gear move forward..stop pull the lever in and I can get into neutral OK. I'll then pull the lever in again put it in gear move forward, stop then try to put it in neutral..and it just will NOT disengage..unless I stop the engine...please help ..I'm at my wits end!!!! |

When you say, "adjusting the cable", do you mean "adjusting the clutch" ? Do you have a service manual? Take the big round cover plate off of your primary cover. Use a torx wrench. It's about a T-25 or T-30, I think. You should be able to see the transmission/primary lube through the cover plate opening but it should not spill out if the bike is level. Screw the cable adjuster in until you can see bare cable. Remove the lock nut and its spring retainer from under the caver plate. Now take a screwdriver and move the adjusting screw out until it is turning free of friction - then back in until you feel it touch - then back out to the fist place that will let the lock nut go on. Use a new o-ring if you can find one, and mind that the spring stays on the lock nut as you replace the cover plate. Now adjust the cable for the proper lever gap when the cable is relaxed. If there is still an issue, you have plate or spring problems. |

Does the X1 have the infamous "grenade plate" that self-destructs in the clutch pack? If so, that might the culprit if normal adjusting doesn't fix it. |

I have a manual and have carried out that procedure a few times now! If it is the plates, I take it you mean the plain metal ones, and I have to dismantle the clutch pack do i really need the special HD spring compressing tool or can something be made? I'm fairly practical, anybody had experience of removing the clutch pack? Is the 'grenade' just one plate or all of 'em!!?? |

Good description of the grenade plate here. It's an assembly of two plates and spring pieces held together by rivets. The rivets can break off causing the spring pieces to shift around thus interfering with proper clutch action. |

Remember that if you replace the grenade plate, you will have to add two plates, one steel and one friction plate. This could very well be your issue; if it is in the process of coming apart, it could result in drag. |

You can make your own spring compression tool out of a 3" PVC pipe cap, a 5/16" fine thread bolt and three 5/16" fine thread nuts. I used it to removed my grenade plate last month. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/589522.html |
