I just noticed that the rear hanger on my Vance and Hines exhaust has the left wing fractured clear through. It's the U shaped bracket, and I basically had the exact same thing ap_sand did: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/588087.html Anyone know where I might find another? | ||

Anyone know off the top of their head if the bracket is made from aluminum or steel? If steel, I can probably take care of it myself. | ||

Weld it, the original welds are weak and the bend is weaker, run a bead down both sides, work good....last long time. | ||

Well, tonight didn't go well – I was trying to get the repacked core into the can and broke one of the welds that attached to the mount that bolts to the billet cap. Now I have two welding projects  Once I do fix the core, I still can't quite figure out how I'm going to get the damn thing to line up right. Once you've stuffed all the stuffing in, it seems to have a mind of its own. I got the repacking kit from Al at American Sportbikes. It's basically shaped like this, so the pillow-cover on it makes it especially bulky and difficult to spread thin where you need it thin: http://www.bristolcore.com/product_p/14291.htm | ||

Take care welding that core back together, it will flash and melt on you, that mesh can't take a lot of heat. I had a hell of a time getting my (old) V&H muffler back together when I repacked it with that kit, and ended up cutting the packing wrap to make it work, it simply would not all fit. I have pics of the process, though mostly it involved cursing, swearing, complaining, griping and "carefully" pushing the whole thing together with as much precision and force as I could manage while throwing most of my weight on it - with it on the floor, propped and braced by my feet to keep it upright. Getting it to all line up was the next hurdle, after getting the thing stuffed, I was surprised at how much of a pain it was compared to re-packing my Supertrapp. | ||

Littlebuggles, at least I know I'm not alone. I will try to be very careful with the mesh – I noticed that it's far thinner than the mounting bracket and figure it'll need to be a pretty delicate tack job. Kevman, ah, that looks solid. | ||

It is very solid and supports the exhaust headers and can far better than the original mounting shoe ever did. It also prevents backwards and forwards movement so takes a lot of strain off of the header nuts. | ||

Yes it is, or to be precise it was made by Maz who specialises in Buell repairs and servicing here in the UK ....it is basically made out of a piece of 1/8" thick steel plate. | ||

I welded the hanger back together and will be remounting it soon. I also repaired the core with a delicate weld, only to have it break as I tried repacking for the 8th time (or so). After that I threw a big hose clamp over both pieces and sucked it down nice and tight. The toughest part of the project was getting the stuffing in the oval VH canister, especially since the core and the inlet are both a little off-center! Littlebuggles was nice enough to offer some encouragement and advice based on his experiences repacking a VH (although he was able to do so without drilling any rivets). After way too much frustration, I finally ended up drilling out the rivets on the front of the canister. Once I got the stuffing in, it was still a very tight fit, requiring a broomstick to direct the core into the inlet. I sealed it up w/ some high-temp silicon, re-riveted, changed my primary oil, and then promptly left for vacation. I'll be back to remount everything and check my primary tension in a week or so. Hopefully the weld on the rear hanger holds up and everything is happy. Final thought: anything else I should do maintenance-wise, as long as I have the exhaust off? | ||

And to cap a bunch of posts for tonight, I got the VH can back on. It was actually a very tight fit... I think the previous owner somehow damaged the inlet pipe that attaches to the header, making the entire thing hard to get back on. It's probably likely that the rear bracket might break again, but hopefully not. Glad to have the thing back together and the bike running again. Thanks to everyone for the help/suggestions! |
