It's been a loooong time since I adjusted the rear shock so I don't remember how. I expected the factory settings to be set right in the middle of the adjustment range. This is what it shows for the "preload or sag." The measurement is between the rear shock mounting bolts and applies with the rider seated on the motorcycle. M2/S3/X1 15.2 -- 15.5 in. M2L 15.63 -- 15.91 in. I set mine up myself--taped a ruler to the shock housing and set a mirror on the floor where I could see what was going on. The ruler showed the difference between no rider and when I was sitting on the bike. I applied that to the measurement between the mounting bolts without a rider. A welding rod (or one could use a dowel, or a broom handle...) and a couple O-rings (masking tape should work) a crescent wrench, and a screwdriver, is all you need to setup up your suspension. I'm gonna to this tonight!
