Just curious how my gas mileage compares to others. City riding, two-up and winter mix gas, my fuel light comes on around 120 miles. Seems low to me but winter mix gas also causes a mpg drop in my Honda Element. |

Riding 80 mph into a headwind My low fuel light came on at 130 miles 3 weeks ago. Been to snowy to ride since then. 1 up no luggage, 1250 kit and a race tune on an '06. |

Usually, I get at least the same mileage when my lady is on the back. Mostly because I'm trying to drive smoothly. |

Seems low to me. I don't think I ever had the low fuel light come on at less than 150 miles on my 07 (before I installed the 09 engine). You're in a considerably colder climate than me so that might explain some loss, but it still seems a little low. All you can do is check tuning (good air filter, fresh plugs, static timing set correctly). Other than that, it pretty much depends on how you ride it. |

Maybe I should be blocking my oil cooler while riding in cold weather to keep from over cooling the engine? I'll double check my static timing. |

I would say a big part of the problem is corn belt ethenol in the fuel. If you ran real gasoline you would get at least 5 more MPG! It's cold now so pinging is probably not a problem but when Summer gets here you might have to back off on the timing a little. Also, unless you're starting it and taking a long ride, with the cold temps means the bike is taking longer to warm up therefore being in "choke" mode longer using more fuel. Several short trips will eat more fuel than one long one. |

I block my oil cooler in cold weather. Just stuff a good ole red rag in the scoop. Less than 30' and your engine takes over 10 miles just to warm up properly. Plus allowing your bike to sit and warm up eats up gas of course. You have a trifecta of gas eating conditions going on. |

Yeah, you're not kidding about short trips. My gas light came on yesterday at 110 miles, sometimes it comes on even sooner. On the rare occasion when I get to spend the whole day on the bike, the first fill-up will still be a little low but after that I average about 44 mpg without any babying. I know that's still low compared to some others but it's a big improvement over the low to mid 30's. |
