based on advice from here I ordered my ECM Spy cable from American Sport Bike (Al) and downloaded the software. Is there a HOW TO here or elsewhere I can reference? I never really tried this sort of thing before - I'm oldskool..... Magneto Flywheel and all that |

ECM Spy is great, but make sure you're patient with it – getting registered/installed (if you're using the latest version) is a process in and of itself. I found this video helpful for my first TPS reset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i33__Qkvhn4 |

So many folks have helped me with all sorts of questions, problems, trip checklisting, and more, that it's great to be able to lend someone else a hand every once in a while. (Esp a fellow '02 X1w owner!) I actually keep ecmspy on a virtual machine (https://www.virtualbox.org/), which is basically a complete windows install running inside of a different computer. I've taken this single virtual machine between different computers I've owned (linux, and currently a mac), and am glad I did, because if you buy a donationware license for ecmspy, the rules for how you can't reinstall or re-unlock the program are onerous (what if you get a new computer). That's the worst part about ecmspy, IMO. Anyways, clearly I'm way more knowledgeable as a geek than a mechanic... people here would get a lot more out of me if they needed to know about windows xp, rather than a buell x1. |

clearly I'm way more knowledgeable as a geek than a mechanic... Amen to that brother. I have a masters in EE and CS, but as a mechanic I'm a bumbling nitwit! Thank goodness folks here are more than willing to help. I got my cable now- can't wait to start *spying* this weekend! My fav- put on GIRLS GONE WILD, Crack a Sam, and start working on the X1! |

Buell Boy, Would it be possible to set up a virtual machine as you described above and then access/run it from an iPad? Now that would be the shit! My laptop took a dump 6-8 weeks ago and now I have no way to use ecmspy. However, I do have an iPad and have thought how sweet it would be to be able to use it to run ecmspy. Just thinking outside the box. If its possible, please let me know how to set it up. |

@bikerrides – I don't think this is possible. There's not a good way to run windows on ipad, plus you'd need to have a USB port to connect to your bike (which I don't think ipad has). But I agree that ecmspy on a mobile device would be really badass. |

Was just digging around and found this app, but it's for android and requires a bluetooth dongle (won't work over USB): http://xoptiinside.com/android_ecmdroid_project |

Dean, I found this, which appears to let you run a PC based VM from an iPad; I didn't read everything, so I can't say that with total authority. It may only be possible as a business app where you set up your VM through a business IT dept. There is a free download on the iPad app store that allows you to connect to your VM. I downloaded it, but need something to connect to. http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/09/vmware-brings-virtu al-machines-to-ipad/ Then there's the issue of the usb port. With that in mind, does anyone make a tablet with a usb port that is Windows based? Could my idea be done at that point? Might be cheaper to set up a VM to run ecmspy and buy a cheap PC based tablet, than to buy a new laptop. Just imagine being out on the road and being able to instantly diagnose a trouble code w/a tool that takes up so little space. That would not only be cool, but even crucial. |

Yeah, I saw that app, but I think it's just a remote window into an existing windows machine, something akin to that "access my desktop anywhere" style software. So even if you did get a USB or bluetooth peripheral to send the data remotely, you'd still need to maintain a pretty fast internet connection to reliably save the data on the windows machine. From what I was reading, it sounds like the CPU architecture on iPad and other mobile devices is pretty different from a PC or mac laptop, so the virtualization stuff directly on an iPad/android is much trickier/borderline impossible. The bluetooth dongle/android app might be the simplest solution, although not exactly cheap or free, since you'll need to build or buy the dongle, which is $30-100 and you'd need an android phone, which you could probably get an old one on ebay for $20-40. I just ordered one, because I already have an android phone, and I've been wanting to do logging from something other than a laptop for a long time. Will let folks know how it goes. |

Thanks guys. After monkeying around with RS232 drivers I think I found one. It SEES the bike now thru COM port 4 at least. So far I see no trouble codes at all. O2 enrichment says 158% The throttle graphs moves when I turn the throttle. I ran diags on the coils, fuel pump and injectors - all finish with no message (youd think it would say TEST OK or something?) The problem is - the bike refuses to START now. It will just barely idle for perhaps 3 seconds, and die. If I apply any thottle it immediately dies. I changed out the plugs to see if that helped - it didn't. GRRRRR |

It actually stop starting before my cable even arrived. It did this once before- but that time replacing the plugs fixed it.. |
