My 2002 EFI X-1 won't start. It was running OK (except for the 4K rev problem noted elsewhere), then for no apparent reason, it reluctantly starts, idles for 1-2 seconds , then dies. If I apply any throttle at all it will not start. It's pretty much like this guy's problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUR9zLUdrtw I have my ECM spy and software now. Can someone point me to a diagnostic procedure I can use to get her at least running again? I have no trouble codes logged (it always kills me when I have a bike that won't even start yet the ECM thinks everything is honky dory!).... Maybe I can do a TPS reset without having to start it? Thanks guys your advice is my command! (Message edited by buellx1w on March 25, 2013) |

My guess... Fuel, Fire, and Air, you're missing one of them. Check for spark then check your fuel filters. Other than that I'd crank the idle screw up and see if you can get it started, you need it running for the TPS reset. |

OK Ill check for spark first.. I have a forcewinder so I dont think the filter could be that restrictive.. THanks |

"If I apply any throttle at all it will not start." Same here. Starts fine if I keep my paws off the throttle. Can you hear the fuel pump? Is it making the same noise it has always made? |

It is recommended to reset the TPS when the motor is hot but you can reset TPS cold for now to get it going. Reset AFV to 100% Resetting the Adaptive Fuel Value. Before you reset the AFV, make a note of the current value, then select the Functions tab in ECM Spy, enter 100% in the AFV box and select Set AFV Start the bike. |

Have you or a prior owner tampered with the ECM? I recently re-programmed one that was messed up, it would only run a few seconds then quit I loaded a standard race ecm profile to it and it ran fine on my bike. |

If ecm spy isn't getting you anywhere, or is too frustrating to sort out... I suggest pulling your injectors and taking them to a local performance shop and have them check for proper flow. I had similar issues with my XB after fighting with ecm spy for a while and rebuilding a problematic pump. After having my injectors rebuilt (five year old bike that sat a lot) the bike ran again. With a 12 year old bike, it is reasonable to expect injectors might need a rebuild. |

+1 what Alfau and Buggles said. TPS reset will work wonders. |

some VERY GOOD ideas here guys- the ECM has been working fine for me for over 10 years. Its the RACE ECM- never reprogrammed as far as I know. I'll try the TPS and AFV. Good ideas- can't get no worse ! GREAT idea on the injectors. The bike DID sit for 2 years (while I saved $$ to do a $2600 tranny rebuild).. The mechanic pulled them and said they were not working but he said he cleaned them and they were fine. But maybe not?

PS I was just reading another thread about fuel injector additives. I DID add seaform- I used the amount recommended on the can for 4 gal initial treatment (about 1/4 can I think) and shortly after- she no start no mo! |

The more I think about it- sitting 2 years, wouldn't make > 4KRPM, and now won't start after sea-foaming it, I think the injectors are probably toast.. was reading the other thread- someone recommended RC Fuel Injector cleaning service. http://www.rceng.com Anyone ever use them? Prices look reasonable.

Can someone point me to a thread for removal of the injectors on an X1? I'm hoping I can do it without removing the tank. I can't find any videos on this. Maybe its so EASY its not worth making one? They appear to be hard to reach- and I see in some threads that the O-Rings are easily destroyed.. THanks! |

"I'm hoping I can do it without removing the tank." Takes about 3 minutes to remove the X1 tank and even less time on M2's S3's. |

The fuel tank capacity is 15.89Liters (4.2 Gal) Carefully calculate the mix ratio for fuel injector cleaner. 20ml per 15L. (approx 1 teaspoon per gallon) Too much injector cleaner will stuff the fuel. If necessary drain tank and start again. |

Given that it sat 2 years and it wont rev past 4K RPM and now it wont even start- I yanked the injectors and packed em up. Tomorrow they'll be on their way to John at RC ..
