Is there a How To article been posted on changing the oil pump gear on a X1 ? I've done a search but can't find anything. TIA, Clive. |

I replaced mine while rebuilding the engine, however from what I am told you need to remove the rocker arms to release pressure on the pushrods. Then it is just removing the nut and the gear slides off. Put the nut back on with locktight and torque to specs. Re-install rockers and you should be good to go. I am sure you will get more options here soon. |

Follow the oil pump r/r in your service manual. You do have one right? American Sport Bike sells them (Message edited by two_seasons on March 16, 2013) |

Yes I have a Workshop Manual, but as this is such a knowledgeable forum I wondered if there was a better way IE someone with hands on experience that has done it, any pitfalls that might arise when doing it, and what was the best make of gear to use. |

The cam cover has to come off for sure. It will probably come *off* without removing the rocker boxes, but doing so carries a lot of risk of damaging the cam bushings in the case. And no way in heck it will go back on with both rocker boxes on. You can save a little work if you put one piston at TDC, and take the other pistons rocker box off. That helps if it's easier to get at a front head rather than a rear head. Be warned though that the timing marks on the cams will not line up in that position though, so you will need to add and use your own timing marks if you take that approach. It would save some work, one less rocker box to take apart. I forget if I had to use a cam locking tool to get the crank nut back on, or had the primary cover off anyway and locked it on that side, or just put it in gear and locked the rear wheel... but I seem to recall some level of fussing with it.
