Thanx in advance for any advice. I had a small oil leak at the starter, took everything apart, replaced gaskets, re-assembled and test rode. Still leaking!!! Could the oil be getting inside the starter and coming out one of the places where the starter bolts together?? Thanx again Glenn |

Is it the starter or the stator wiring? The rubber bung with the stator wire likes a bit of silicon sealant when you fit it. |

Probably leaky at the Grommet where the stator wire exits the primary case. |

The starter has no oil inside it. You are seeing primary/transmission oil. Clean everything off with a paper towel, run the motor for a few minutes, and see where the leak really is. Use sealant on the starter gasket (you should be able to re-use the one you just installed) and clean the mating surfaces thoroughly. If it is the stator wire grommet, goop it up with silicone or soft permatex #2. |

Make sure the transmission vent isn't plugged up....just say in. |

..also,hopefully the crank seal didn't go-excessive blowby from the rings, wear an tear on the seal, etc will strain the seal and push excessive psi/engine oil and gases past it and into the primary cavity.Any evidence of oil"sweating/weeping" from the outer primary cover case half?Just throwing other probabilites out if it continues after all of the previous fixes are tried. Also check to be sure your top end "venting" of gases isn't plugged as well....just sayin'...check all areas to eliminate any related problems. Those seals/gaskets/grommets can only "hold back" a certain amount of pressure.Go beyond that and you have a leaking issue.LT |

Hey guys, thanks for all the great advice. The bung where the stator wires come through is dry. I sealed that with silicon a few years ago when I replaced the starter. I know the trans vent hose is clear, and there is no fluid in it when I remove it. Harleyelf said no oil inside the starter, I understand that, but isn't there some kind of seal to keep trans oil from going into it. Just running it for a few minutes doesn't create a leak, I should have mentioned my last test ride was 30 miles. Please keep the ideas coming, as of now I am leaning towards replacing the starter. It has other issues to so I am hopeing to kill two birds with one stone Glenn |

Yes, the starter pinion gear engages the clutch basket, which is half-immersed in trans oil. The surfaces at the starter flange should both be flat and there is seldom a leak from a recently installed gasket. It's way above the oil level. I'm leaning toward the crank seal theory if your trans oil level is correct. |

Can't speak about the Buells, but larger Denso OSGR starters used in industry have a lip oil seal around the sliding pinion shaft to prevent oil entering the starter clutch assembly or the solenoid housing. The starter clutch is 'permanently' lubricated like wheel bearings etc. I need to take a H-D starter apart to know what's in there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Big-Dog-Starter-drive-clut ch-w-oil-seal-for-Baker-Right-side-drive-DSSC-05-u p-/360463354899 |

Okay, my head is starting to hurt. If the crank seal is bad I am assuming engine oil is filling the trans up, to a point that it is going out the vent tube or starter gasket. If the trans oil level is good then wouldn't the seal be good or does the oil go back to the crank case at shutdown. I probably need to ride some more so I can find where the oil is coming from. I am not talking huge leak, I just want to be able to ride to Daytona next month. I do really appreciate everybodys input Glenn |

Remove as much bodywork as you can around the engine. clean the heck outa the whole area with spray solvent or electro motor cleaner, then blow dry with compressed air. That will give you a clean, dry engine and will make the leak easier to spot. not to worry the spray wont hurt anything. Good luck |

If oil is being sucked into the primary case from the engine because of a faulty seal the oil level will drop in the oil tank.(monitor this carefully) If you over fill the primary it will purge oil until it's happy. I use a suction devise to remove excess if needed . |

Oil would be forced into the primary because of a faulty seal not sucked. |

Okay guys, ( girls ) found my leak. There is a weep hole in the bottom of the starter. The internal seal in the starter must have gone and it was getting oil through the primary drive. It would not do it just running around town. Started leaking on way back from Daytona at prolonged highway speeds. Just something to put in the back of your minds. Thanx again for all the other advise Glenn |
