Hi all, i have just purchased a 1997 S1 lightning. 15,000 miles, fsh, standard condition except supertrapp muffler, kury akyn air box. My assesment after 200 miles of riding; PROS - Torque, sound, Looks, Low speed flickability, low seat height, comfortable for long distance work. CONS - Poor turning circle, frelling heavy clutch, needs man handling at higher speeds. ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE - 1 - Best Tyres for grip, sizes & pressures. 2 - Setting up suspension for road use with 200kg rider. 3 - Mechanism to lighten clutch lever action. 4 - fuel economy. 5 - straighter handle bars i have search through archive but have not found satisfactory answers for my questions. thanks for any replies. regards eze * - why clean it when you can ride it |

Ez2be, I have a 97 S1. The following works for me. 1- Metzeler SporTec M1 2- Which rear shock? / Install Pro-Series fork springs? 3- I find the clutch pull tolerable 4- hovers around 50 mpg, unless I am really playing hard and drops to around 40 mpg 5- Motorcross bar that has less pull back and is shorter. I cut the stock measurements by about half. |

At 2.2 KG per pound, you weigh 440 pounds? Gonna need to beef up your suspension. How do you keep ur arse from dragging on the rear wheel with that skinny little S1 seat? |

Shotgun, do you really think he meant 440lbs. You're to cruel!! Eeeezie dude, 1 - Best Tyres for grip, sizes & pressures. If you have stock rims, that's 5 inch, 185 x 55 offer a steeper profile and will turn in quicker than a 190. If you have the PM rims at 5.5 inch the above applies, but in my experience the 190 sits to flat across the rim. Yeah I know, it looks fat. Start with the factory recommended pressures and experiment from there. 2 - Setting up suspension for road use with 200kg rider. Firstly, like Loki said, Pro Race springs from Buell are a must. About £50. They just work so much better in all areas than stock. Of course, they are stiffer. They will suit your 200lb's better too. Get the workshop manual. There's a whole chapter dedicated to setting the suspension to suit. I think there's a PDF file here on BaDweB somewhere too. Setting the 'sag' to suit your weight is the first step. All this stuff is archived here somewhere. 3 - Mechanism to lighten clutch lever action. They are a little heavy anyway but not really for a 200lb guy. I'd pressure clean and lube the cable. They've a plastic liner inside the cable, and it's crap. It's an absolute must to pressure feed and lube with light oil - will get it much better than stock. Check the route too. They can have a tight bend at the lever end but this can be smoothed out a little. 4 - fuel economy. I never thought mine was anything but good, even with the 100 horse motor running the HSR42. No one's thrashed a S1W more than I sir. One word, TUNING? 5 - straighter handle bars Why? I think the stock bars are just perfect. I adjust mine so as there's a small gap between the tank and bar end when in full lock. You don't need a lot of lock unless you need to get around a tight corner in the passage to your back garden! Forget it. Rent a 'lock-up'. Rocket |
