Hi, I'm new to the board with my first Buell after months of searching. While I've always liked the concept and look Buells, a recent ride on a friends S1 Lightning really kicked things into gear for me. I decided I needed a tuber, and given that it just had to be a S1 White Lightning. Well after lots of looking and a few close calls, I found a decent S1W, originally white/white but the tank and seat were repainted black, 10,000 miles. The deal was done and it was inbound. I then came upon a pristine 2,400 mile, one female owner (not kidding!) example that had not been messed with. Figures, doesn't it? Well, I just bit my lip and bought that one as well. So I now have two S1W's! I will repaint the first one back to Pearl White and sell it. In the mean time I have been riding and fettling the other one and have a question. The carbon rear hugger was removed (but came with the bike) and it has the license plate located under the tail, with what appears to be a home made aluminum mount. It's tucked up nice and high against the inner fender well. Anyways, the rear wheel is bottoming against the plate / fender under aggressive riding. It looks like it's getting about 5" of travel to do it. I will relocate the plate to under the tail light, but it seems the bike is too soft for me regardless. Does anyone know what springs are standard on a S1W? I'm thinking they possibly may have been switched out to softer springs for the female rider. I'm 230 lbs, ride pretty hard and normally go with heavier springs, particularly on my track bikes. I've seen info on Penske rear shocks and pro race front springs, but have not seen anything on heavier rear springs, or even what is stock. I would prefer to keep the stock shock but go with a heavier spring and heavier fork springs to match. Any info or ideas are most welcome (Message edited by johnb79x on November 25, 2012) |

The bike seems about the same height as my other S1W and my friends S1, but I'll measure them up to be sure. Incidentally my other S1W has not bottomed, but I haven't ridden it as much or as hard. Here is the only pic I have |

It's a little hard to tell from the picture but I think your pre-load is set way too soft for your weight. I see a lot of threads on the shock showing. At 230 lbs I would think that almost no threads should be showing. |

Solved. I heard back from the prior owner, she did have the bike lowered. I'll reset the pre-load as Jim advised and check the fork tubes in the triple clamps as well. Thanks for the help. |

Wow. Very nice! I've had a 916 and a 900ss in the past, but I've always liked the V4 the best, so Being unable to likely ever own a desmosedici I made my own from a '95 VFR frame and engine, the rest being mostly latest model cbr componentry and bodywork. |

The V4 is sweet. I've always liked VFR's myself. |
