I just bought an 08 1125R. Love it. I didn't notice the noise on the test ride, but do two days later. I'm not saying it wasn't there before, just now noticed it. I've read tons of threads about the clatter, so it being normal eased my mind. There do seem to be some scenarios, however, that turned out to be something bad. My question: How do I know if I have a normal noise, or if I should be concerned? it's coming from the top, as in from under the air box. It doesn't do it at idle, but when you rev it, either in neutral or under acceleration. its pretty loud, as in not just a ticking sound. The bike has 4,000 miles and the oil level is spot on. It's clean too.

Try listening to some 1125 YouTube videos for comparison?

Just for comparison my 09 does it at idle and gets quiet when revs rise, so opposite to you, and just to make it more baffling my bike only does it sometimes. You may want to check your rotor nut is tight as your symptoms don't seem to match the usual description of the clatter which, if Badweb is to be trusted, is fixed with the updated cam chain guides.
Good luck.

Might be worth pulling the ignition cover/stator, locking the crank, removing, cleaning and then torquing the rotor nut to 300 foot pounds with red lock tight.

Or try an after market exhaust system, ear plugs, turn up your head phones.... in other words, as you suggested, it could be something or it might be nothing

When I moved up to the EBR Racing ECM it seems to have quieted down a bit. Moving to AMSOIL instead of the SYN3 appears to have made the clatter at low rpms less of an issue. The best part of the oil change, however, is that my bike definitely runs a lot cooler than it did with SYN3.

Thanks all. So there are two mentions of the rotor nut. As I've said, I did read quite a lot of threads. I thought that noise would be coming from the side of the motor instead of from the top?

Fatbuoy, I live in Arlington. I have an '08 I bought before the fire sale. I have dealt with all the usual issues myself. There has been nothing I could not handle myself. If you'd like me to listen to it, we can get together sometime. Mine makes clatter noises. It always has. It has never been an issue. I enjoy wrenching on things. I've been inside the valve covers, clutch cover, and rotor / stator cover. I never found anything scary. They all make noise to a certain extent.
