I put the TKC80's on my Tiger, I like them a lot, but they're noticeably 'bumpy' at slow speeds, but what the heck, its an enduro tire. Question, has anyone researched if you can put a bigger tire on the front wheel? Or change the front wheel to a taller one? I think some more beef in the front would give it a meaner look. I'm leaning towards the TKC's again, and yes, I already know it won't corner as well, but I'm not doing any of that type riding, if I take a long trip I take one of my FL's which are better set up for long distances. You won't have the clearance to put a taller wheel on. Someone was considering a lager tire up there but determined he would have to remove the chin fairing and grind the front "buttons" off of the exhaust. I mounted a used TKC80 (a guy was going to toss it because he had to put a plug in it after picking up a nail! Fool!) in a 150 size on the rear a while back when I was riding some of the Transamerica trail in Arkansas. If you have anything loose that you need to climb, it will beat any other tire choice hands down. It had 1800 miles when he gave it to me, and 700 miles later, it was done. I have also had Avon Distanzias and D616s (at the end of my second set of 616s). Both perform pretty well in rough IMO, but the Dunlops feel better on wet roads. The front 616 developed a rather weird wear pattern now towards the end of its life. I probably like the Avons a little better as an all around tire, but the D616 is cheaper and is almost as good in every respect. They also last longer (3.8K vs 5.5K for me) and come in the right size. | ||

Thanks Buewulf. I'm just used to having like a 21 in front and a 18/19 in back. Seems "squatty" in the front for me, but I'll get used to it. I can always have a set of custom triple trees made up and extend it out a couple inches...  I marked the Distanzias off because they don't show the right size for the bike, or did I miss something? I really like the look of those big ass knobs on the TKC's. I've been a fan of Dunlops on other applications, so I may end up with them, and what will probably happen is I'll get the TKC's and wear them out and then go with the D616's next and then decide which one will be more for me to hang on to for the 3rd and so on times I change them. Tempted to look into a rear tire size on the front- anyone tried that one yet?  | ||

There is no 180 size in the Distanzia. You'd have to get a 160, but it mounts up fine. If you like the chunky look though, you'll want to stay with a 180 tire size for the rear. | ||

Down to 2 tire choices- D616 or TKC's. One on each end then. | ||

I like matching tires on all my bikes, just seems better. Define "better" - better for parts sourcing, maybe...but unless all your bikes are identical, I don't see how having the same tire on every one is better. I have different motorcycles. They serve different purposes. They have different strong points, and different weak points. And they all have different tires than each other, to emphasize their strengths. The chunky look...is a chunky look. I got over that years ago with my Jeep; I put on big knobby tires and lifted it and it looked really cool. Drives like s#*t, rides like s#*t, fuel mileage is in the crapper...it's getting stock size tires when these wear out (which will be never because I don't really like driving the thing anymore, so it doesn't get any miles). Personally, I think TKC's on a Uly...will be just as crappy. If you want a dirt bike, buy a dirt bike and put dirt bike tires on it. I can't see how they'll work well on a Ulysses. They don't even offer the correct size! But...to each his own, I suppose... | ||

Rat- Matching tire on each bike. I have 2 FL's, can you see them with TKC's? I have a TT600 with a set of 80/20's on it as well. Sorry that wasn't clear, I want matching brand on both wheels on all my bikes, front and rear. I know all about the truck tires, I have one F350 with 20's and one with stock, the 20's are OK, but I had a set of MT's that were I think 38X14.50's (?) and that hurt. Still got 30K out of them though... I could have sworn that I saw the right sizes in the TKC's offered, or did they stop making them? Thanks for the input. | ||

TKC80 is available in Uly sizes now. It will ride like a DS bike which is fine if that is what your Uly to be. | ||

Thought so Buewulf, thanks, I'm ordering them suckas! I'll not be riding like a lot of you do, if I put 100 miles in a day on it, thats enough. I have a 1984 FLT set up with highway bars, the floor boards, and my legs are long enough to stretch back to the passenger pegs- so I have 3 places to put my legs on a long trip. And a 1993 FL that was custom built into a bobber that is pretty cushy as well. The Uly will be a grocery getter and a bike to bump around in the country side on camping trips. I think they'll do me just fine for the first set, and if I don't like them enough, I'll get the D616's next time and try something else after them... Thanks again! |
