Does anyone know what the supply from the stator/regulator is vs. what the cycle is supposed to draw? Ever since I installed the new fuel pump it seems like I am on the hairy edge of function with both headlights operating. Headlights are 65 watt each. I unplugged one of them on the ride to work this morning and the cycle was a lot happier. I'm also going to say that my battery is defective and should have a new one at my house on Thursday, hopefully this will also help. Regulator is brand new, stator is stock from 2003, has new style connectors that came with the new regulator. What I'm really trying to determine is if I should order a stator and get ready to change it. With both headlights I get voltage swinging from 13.5 to 14.5 when the battery is feeling bad, and around 14.15 steady when the battery is feeling good. Same readings even when both lights are on and the fan runs so I think I have enough capacity from the charging system to handle everything but thought it would be worth some discussion before I start changing parts. |

Current capacity will vary directly with RPM, so the "output" question is kind of moot... the answer is that it depends on RPM. Two 65 watt bulbs on all the time is definitely pushing it. That being said, so long as you don't add other stuff like heated gear, the bike should do it fine. 13.5 volts is still charging the battery, as is 14.5. So I think your stator is still fine. I bet the issue starts and stops with your battery. |

I was looking at the 65 watt lamps as only 20 watts more than stock, wish I could find 55 watt H9 lamps for my headlights. I figured it was probably OK, didn't have any issues until the AGM battery was getting weak, and this Lithium battery definitely has an issue. For the most part I get better than 13.5 at idle, normally right up to 14.15 at idle except for some days where things are just not working right. The only change is really the battery and regulator. I was popping headlights so I figured that the regulator was going bad, come to find out I think it was the dead AGM that was causing some kind of odd condition to kill the filament in the lamps when I was starting and the clock was resetting. Just checked the tracking and the replacement battery should be here tomorrow so I should know by the end of the day Friday if it is a fix or I go back to AGM style. Or maybe I buy some good A123 cells and make my own pack. |
