The other night on the freeway a guy was flashing his lights at me and when he pulled up along side me he pointed to the back of my XB. I pulled over and noticed that the rear running light was not working. It would work when I pulled the brake but go completely off when I let go.

I checked the connections and changed the bulb and now I have the opposite problem. The brake light is always on but it doesnt get any brighter when i apply the brakes.

I put a jumper on the front brake switch to see if the switch was bad but nothing happened when I bypassed it. Does anybody know what I can do from here?

Also, there are two filaments in the bulb, one is straight and one is curled. I assumed the curled one would be the running light?? Is that correct or is it the other way around?

It sounds as if you swapped the wires when checking the connections, that's why it is now always on.

Get a multimeter and check voltages on each wire when applying brakes.

The curled filament is most likely brake. It has a longer piece of wire therefore emitting more light when energized.
